Small, light knife.,

This review is from: SOG Specialty Knives & Tools TFSA-97 Flash I with Combination Serrated and Fine Blade, Black TiNi (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a small knife. It is very light. I will say it again think SMALL. It is sharp. The locking mechanism slides back and forth while the blade is closed. It does not feel cheap, just has some uni-directional movement it in. If you shake the knife up and down like a bottle of spray paint you'll get the locking mechanism to slide up and down and make a clicking noise. The safety works well - when it is disengaged you will see a red indicator area. You kind of need finger nails to engage/disengage it. Gloves might be a problem. The handles are zytel - very light. It's not cheap plastic but might feel like it to some people. The clip works well. It is tight. I can carry this knife in my jeans pocket without really noticing it, or I can clip it to the top of the pocket. The clip is configured in such a way so the knife is not visible and will not extend from your pants/pocket which is nice. There is also a small hole for a key ring - though the key ring would have to be non-standard as the hole is not large.

I love this knife (just buy it already).
Great knife perfect for everyday carry. Sharp blade, the combination serrated blade comes in handy when you need to cut through rope. Really Quick assisted opening. Slim profile,Light weight, You forget you are even carrying it. It has such a great low profile I even carry it while wearing dress pants. SOG makes great knifes, I am going to buy another one.

I am a huge SOG fan and have purchased many of their fixed blades. The Flash 1 is my first folding blade SOG. While the Flash 1 is well built knife it is just too small. It lists at 2.5 inches but it is a small 2.5. The other problem with knife is the locking action. The metal slide is just too lose and does not sit anywhere. That being said it seems to have broken-in and works bit better now.
As with moth SOGs the blade construction is top notch. The synthetic handle is also of top quality. The knife may be small but between the size and safety-lock it is hard to get in trouble with this knife.

Reviewing the SOG Flash I, TiNi Back.
Got this knife in about a week ago and put it through the test. First off, pay attention to the knife size you are looking for. Some have mentioned they wished this knife was a little bigger and I too would love for SOG to come up with an intermittent sized knife between the Flash I and Flash II but I knew what I was buying and what size it would be and find the Flash I to be an excellent day-to-day carry knife. I spend most of my days in an office and found the SOG Trident I had purchased to be too big for slacks in the office environment. It's bulky in the pocket when you set in a chair most all the time. The Trident is an excellent knife and would be great for most that work outside or would be carrying it when they are outside and the Flash II's size is pretty close to the Trident. This knife is perfect for me as an everyday carry knife. Works great for about everything I need in a knife for everyday use. I like the black TiNi finish. I've just never liked anything flashy out in the woods and the TiNi finish accomplishes this. The blade came sharp. I used it for cutting a few boxes, cut a sheet of paper a few time and whittled on a couple sticks and the blade still shaves just like it did when I first got it. Seems like it's going to do a good job staying sharp. Put a little pressure on the blade stud and it whips open fast. Unlike a couple others who posted reviews, I found it very easy to operate the entire knife, including unlocking, opening and closing the knife one-handed. I don't have long fingers so I'm not sure if that's a help or hindrance in one-hand operations ... but again, it worked great for me one-handed. I saw another review on here before I purchased mentioning the noise the closing mechanism makes when the knife is closed. I have to say I would prefer it didn't do this either. With the knife closed the mechanism can slide freely back and forth on the short track causing a little rattling sound if you shake it. I haven't noticed any sound walking with it in my pants so it isn't bad and I wouldn't be disgruntled with it enough to mark this knife down any on its review. Lastly, I've got the SOG Trident, Seal Pup Elite, Tsunami and now the Flash I. They have all been excellent knives and I had to deal with SOG support one time on an issue I caused. Their support sold me on their products. They were helpful and very quick acting. My problem was solved and in my mailbox two days later and I live on the opposite end of the country near about from them.

I bought this knife as an every day carry knife and its is one of the best knifes i have ever used. its small and super lite weight. the blade is sharp and holds an edge. the knife is quick to deploy and can be opened and closed with one hand. the safety is a great feature i don't use it much except when the little ones are around and i leave it on a table. my only problem if you can call it that is the locking lever (little gray button in the picture) can make a little noise when the blade is closed its hard to hear when its in your pocket but wen its out like on your belt it can be clearly heard as it moves while you move. its not really a big deal but i hate making noise when i walk. but its a great knife and i carry it every day

This is a small and light knife that sits in the bottom of your pocket waiting for deployment. It is small enough, you can even attach it to your keychain, but that is pushing it a bit. I like the half serrations which give it more utility. Regarding the black finish on the blade, it is very durable, but it will wear off a bit over time.
I had to send this in for service because the lock was getting loose. I wouldn't say I was abusing the knife, but sometimes I use the knife I have (this one) versus going and getting a larger sturdier knife. Anyway, after 5 years of hard use, this knife needed some TLC. SOG basically replaced all the parts except the blade and sent it back for free. I was very happy with this. If they hadn't replaced all the parts, I would have bought a new one anyway.

I have bought several of these knives. I have given many as gifts and they are always well received and complimented by the recipients. The knife is small, compact and very easy to use. The spring-loaded assited opening feature is far easier to use than other thumb release knives. The knife can easily be opened and closed with one hand. I constantly carry my SOG Flash I.

Small is better than you think...,

I have owned this knife for better than 2 years now. At first, I was a little dismayed at the small size of the knife, but after years of use I can say that issue all but disappears very quickly.
The knife is VERY light - while the handle appear to be plastic, it's actually a specially reinforced resin - it is completely unscratched and looks as new as the day I got it. The blade holds an edge VERY well - I set the edge with a kitchen knife sharpener every 3 months or so (depending on use) and it has yet to disappoint. The black TiNi finish is bullet-proof - this knife is my daily pocket knife and it sees a lot of use; yet it remains unscratched regardless. The real beauty of the knife is the the size and weight - the strength of the blade lets you tackle tasks that you might think it's too small for - nope. The light weight means that it disappears in your pocket - it doesn't stick out when you are walking around and it isn't so heavy that it makes a constant bumping against your leg. There are times when you DO need a bigger knife, but for everyday use this one can't be beat!

This review is from: SOG Specialty Knives & Tools TFSA-97 Flash I with Combination Serrated and Fine Blade, Black TiNi (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'll try to keep this review as simple and to the point as possible
Pros: Very Light(perfect for every day carry), spring assist opening is very smooth and quick, durable feel, very little blade movement when locked open, pocket clip sets the standard(deep carry, very secure), looks amazing. Cons: Smaller than I thought it would be. If you don't want one that is a little on the small side, go with the Flash II All in all, a very excellent knife. By far my favorite every day carry. This knife is PERFECT and sets a high standard for others to follow. SOG does it right! 5/5 Stars, easy. |
