Product Description

The SOG Specialty Knives & Tools TS01-N Tsunami Tanto Knife is an improved version of the popular classic SOG knife with refined overall balance, crossguard grooves and a tactile handle. Made of AUS-8 steel with an attractive satin finish, the 6.5-inch straight edge, fixed blade has a tanto shape with a very strong tip that's ideal for piercing, sharpens easily and makes quick work of any task. The ergonomically contoured and well-balanced handle has a black finish and is made of an extremely tactile diamond checkered Kraton that will fit comfortably in your hand. This knife has a lanyard hole, nylon lanyard and a secure MOLLE attachment with hook and loop closure on the black nylon sheath for added portability. The Tsunami has an overall length of 10.9-inches, blade thickness of 0.15-inches and weighs 6.8-ounces. The SOG Specialty Knives & Tools TS01-N Tsunami Tanto Knife comes with a limited lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials. Each SOG product is created with the help of company founder and chief engineer, Spencer Frazer. Known for their uncompromising style and performance, these knives and tools showcase innovation, dependability and a unique, futuristic style that has garnered awards and recognition worldwide. SOG products have also won favor among law enforcement, military and industrial customers that rely on their tools to perform flawlessly in the toughest, most adverse conditions.

From the Manufacturer

With the reintroduction of the popular Tsunami, SOG has taken what made the knife so great and improved it. Some of the changes made are subtle, like refining the overall balance. Some are more obvious like the grooves in our crossguards and a tough Ti-Ni coating option. You will like the different shapes of both of these blades.

Nice grippy rubber handle.

It could have really good potential but it needs a bigger finger guard with something on top to brace the thumb.

Strong and sturdy knife that is very good for whittling.

I've got several SOG knives, one of which I thought was good (Seal Pup Elite) except for a too-slippery Zytel handle, and one of which was poor in quality and sharpness (Seal Aura). This Tsunami was the best of all. Great Kraton grip, but unlike the comparable Cold Steel Recon Tanto or SRK, it has a solid metal fingerguard with indents that really help the fingers not slip. (I don't totally trust the flexible Cold Steel half-hilt.) Jimping on the back of the blade is perfect, letting your hand truly lock onto the knife. The blade was amazingly sharp; right up there with a Cold Steel Tanto Lite and Master Tanto. The blade feels long in reach, with a longer, narrower tanto point than most tantos. I'd hesitate to stress the point and blade with a lot of rough work. This is much more a fighter than utility blade, I assume; long, slender, fast and wicked sharp. (Although some reviewers on the web say they've used it for bushcraft and it's stood up well.) It's a lovely looking knife, too. The blade angle, polish and unique SOG grip swell combine to make it an eye-catcher. The SOG nylon sheath was a disappointment because the retention strap was only a cheap velcro closure, although the rest of the sheath is OK (thus my 4 stars). I fixed that problem by attaching button/snap fasteners through the velcro for a couple of bucks from Home Depot. Now it's velcro and snap, like the Seal Pup Elite. I really like tanto blades, and this one is a beauty that I like having in my collection, would definitely trust in self-defense, and am willing to try in the woods.

The Shipping on this knife was amazing, I paid the normal shipping and receiving and got it the next day. And when i got it i couldn't wait to open the box. But heres the deal, i deducted 1 star because i couldn't deduct 1 1\2 stars, and i didn't feel it deserved to be deducted 2 full stars. This is why; The knife is not well balanced, the blade is significantly heavier than the handle. (which if you have handled well balanced knives you can easily tell the difference) and second the sheath it comes with all though nice, hurts in the performance of deploying the blade. The strap that Velcros over the handle of the knife when in the sheath catches the blade when you try to deploy it and even when you try to put it back in the sheath. But like with all things, with practice you will get accustomed to its ways.

On another note, the handle has really nice grip on it, it fits in the hand well. (though it is a bit on the thin side)and i personally think they could have made it a little thicker. but lets get to the blade. this knife is decently sharp out of the box. (Not Shaving sharp) But to me that's no big deal because i normally resharpen my knives out of the box to get the best edge that i can. but i didn't sharpen this knife immediately because i wanted to test the factory edge and do some wood cutting drills with it. It did a great job of splitting wood (five maple tree logs with ease), and it did decent with chopping drills (Chopped through 3 maple tree branches 12" in diameter). But i must say when i was done giving it a bit of a work out, the blade still sliced through paper like butter. And since this model has the satin finish the clean up was great.

Whoa! A katana in a MOLLE sheath! How great is that!

First of all, I'm a freak for Tanto blades in particular, and katana styles in general, so I had to get this knife.

Second of all, I'm hooked on SOG quality, and my collection is replete with them. But I'm fussy.

I'm extremely happy with my SOG Tsunami. I was a little worried that the narrow grip would feel too tentative in my hand. But the Kraton grip creates a confident "feel", that I like very much.

This is one of the sharpest blades I've ever owned. With it's thick cross-section, it slices through heavy objects with ease -- so long as you use a power-swipe without stutter or hesitation (a coconut for instance).

I might have preferred a top guard (or quillion) rather than a thumb-rasp, but so far I'm growing used to it. Again, the Kraton grip helps in that regard.

What this knife amounts to, is your basic heavy 7-inch thick-bladed katana. It's a brutal defense weapon, that will scare the pants off anybody, and it can take off a hand or an arm with one powerful swipe. It's also a good camp knife, although I prefer a serrated clip-point blade for that.

The MOLLE sheath will attach to a load bearing vest, or to MOLLE accessories with it's own dual MOLLE straps (no separate retention straps needed). It will also easily serve as "belt-carry" in a variety of ways, either with the MOLLE straps, or with slits provided for that purpose. Construction is double-stitched and riveted. The nylon will fray in heavy woods, or on concrete rifle range paddocks, but a little Super Glue will patch and reinforce it just fine.

The only reason I didn't blast away with 5 stars, is the inexplicable puny Velcro retention strap on the sheath.
