Avid hiker seeks great knife,

I'm an avid outdoors person and my husband rule is always carry a good knife. Well, this is a great knife.
It is sharp out of the box (like mentioned by another reviewer), well-balanced, comfortable for my small hand, and I love the carrying sheath. Unlike others I think the sheath is very well thought out (perhaps SOG is trying to appeal to a broader public and make the sheath more functional/versatile to pull in more people). I very much doubt this was an afterthought. I company as good as SOG is not going to make a superior product and then not research and just throw together a sheath. I wear it on my hip, my backpack, my camelbak, and my leg. Love, love, love that I can do that and adapt it to my needs. I haven't abused the knife as others have so I can't attest to how well the edge is held, but it is so sharp my husband can easily shave with it. My biggest requirements for my knife were fitting my small hand and having it be well-balanced (and of course sharp). This fits the bill. Someone mentioned it was a high price for a fixed blade. When I am outdoors I do NOT want my knife to be on a multitool or flip open. By the simple virtue of the fact that it is two pieces makes for a less strong blade. I want the strength that comes from one piece of metal running the entire length of the knife (through the handle). I liked it so much we purchased one for my mom who is an avid hiker as well. So, that should tell you something--we bought this knife twice because we were so pleased. I think you would be too.

AUS6 is fine,
By
This review is from: SOG Specialty Knives & Tools M37-N SEAL Pup (Tools & Home Improvement)
With all of the exotic steels out there folks have become "steel snobs" AUS 6 is getting a lot of bad press. I think people are forgetting that the AUS series is an exotic blade and contrary to what I keep hearing, far superior to 440s. I am in love with AUS 6! This steel is soft and loses it's edge after a few rough cuts however, this can be remedied in just a few swipes across a good sharpening stone. I keep one of those small stones in the sheath (I got the nylon sheath, not the Kydex). I know there are some really advanced stainless steels out there like the ATS-34 and then there are some cool alloys but sharpening those things can make them more trouble than they are worth. I know that AUS 6 supposedly attracts rust but if you keep it dry and clean with a little oil, it will be fine. I just wipe on a little 2-in-1 oil every once in a while and then wipe it clean. So far, I have used mine quite a bit and the powder coat is holding on well but from what I have been reading on some of the knife boards it will eventually come off. If that happens I will update this review to make it a 3. One more thing I want to comment on is the size. The pup is a perfect conceal knife or open carry.

Great Knife,

I have had this knife about a year now and would definitely recommend it to others. I used it during Air Force survival training (SERE) and it met any challenge I threw at it. My instructor said he would be ordering one once we got out of the woods. I will never take off without it in my helmet bag. Not being worried about conceal carry, the sheath works great for me. I like the "quick" release belt loop on it.

Great knife, high price, bad sheath,

The knife is good. The handle has a hand-friendly shape and a non-slip texture. It was very sharp out of the box. Most fixed-blade knives are either too large to be convenient or too small to be usefull over long periods. This one is just right. The price is a little high, given that it is a fixed-blade knife and has no moving parts. The steel used is fairly standard stuff and the handle is an easily molded material. Nothing about it should make it expensive, although Amazon's price is considerably lower than most online competitors. You can probably find a roughly equally functional knife for less but not quite as durable long-term and not as stylish. As with other SOG knives, you have the choice of: (1) paying a little more for the name and style, but still getting a decent knife with a little more flare than alternatives at Wally-World (2) getting a cheaper knife that is CLOSE to the same quality and saving about $10-15 (3) paying almost double the price to move up to the next quality level Like many other knives of its type, this one comes with a sheath that looks like more of an afterthought that was grudgingly put together by the manufacturer at the end. It works, but the overall finish and quality is not up to the quality level of the knife. It is made of a semi-flexible plastic material used with many quality knives these days. But this one has sharp, scratchy edges and is larger than necessary in total size. SOG also appears to have panicked while making the sheath because they didn't know exactly what direction to go in. The sheath can be used almost any way imaginable, but is not ideal for any use. But if you want a regular old standard knife sheath, there are TONS of aftermarket options out there for literally just a few dollars.

Great knife for your pistol holster.,

The Seal Pup is a great knife to have alongside your pistol. This rode next to my M9 on a Blackhawk Serpa and Omega holster. Held its edge, the grip was good if you were not wearing gloves and is made cutting chores easy. The 4 star rating is because the sheath was a bit cheap. Chunks got torn out of it. The blade finish also wears off. I ended up engraving mine a bit so it didn't look like everyone else's knife. Everyone seemed to be carrying these since they were cheap and sold locally. I would suggest these were serial numbered so you could at least ID yours from another one. Great buy and if you don't have a need for an M9 bayonet, this could be your fixed blade for travel and deployments.

This knife is perfect! I am an avid hiker, hunter, camper, and fisherman, the S.O.G. seal pup's overall length is ideal for most practical applications, large enough to get the job done, but not so large that it becomes cumbersome. It is easy to get a good purchase on the handle, even when your hands are cold and wet! The blade holds an edge extremely well and is sharp enough to cut a floating poop without rippling the water!

I bought this product because I had seen good reviews and noticed that the price was extremely low. I was not disappointed! This is one of the best knifes that I have ever used, and will most likely be one best that I will ever use. Immediately upon receiving this knife, i put it into action. Cutting wood that would destroy any other knife was quickly dispatched. My previous knife was the Ka-Bar black fighter. I was a little disappointed that if i tried to cut even a little stick, it would scratch the coating. Not so much as a scratch was produced when I used the Seal Pup.
I had read reviews that had said the nylon sheath included was not up to par. This was not the case. The sheath is a good size and has a nice compartment that can hold a multi-tool or a sharpener. The only draw back is that getting the knife in quickly while running or on the go can be a little difficult only because the strap that secures the knife is a little thick. Overall this is a great knife. I have been an outdoors person all my life and it is always a necessity to have a good knife on hand, and this one fits the bill. I can now see why the Navy SEALs use this knife. Great job SOG!!!

Great knife. Misleading description.,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is, in fact, a great knife - well suited for most fixed blade applications in the outdoors, etc. And at a great price. However, they lost the fifth star because of their description of the sheath. While it is the standard issue sheath, it is NOT the kydex (sp?) sheath that most think of when researching this knife. Rather it's the standard nylon sheath with the exterior pocket. It might have kydex in it, but the real kydex sheath is not made of fabric and comes with a few more ammenities. Not a deal breaker, but still disappointing.
