Will look for different product.

Installed location is key - you want good sun exposure, but some shielding from severe weather, sprinklers, etc.

Update after a year: replaced the batteries and it still works well.

Apparently someone forgot to put uv filters in the plastic covering the solar panels. After a year they're opaque and don't pass enough sunlight into the panels to charge the battery.

This house address box is a great bargain for the price. The first one I bought lasted 6-years, which is pretty impressive considering that it withstood full sun, all day, every day, in the dry American Southwest. The numbers are easy to apply and it is easy to install. I have just bought a second one. The first one still works but the numbers and front panel were toasted from the sun!

The solar house number would be exposed to the elements . But since the housing is not water tight , moisture will enter it and ruin the battery within a short time . I ASSUMED (something one should not do !) , that a product like this would have to be designed to withstand moisture .The customer service agreed with me . Barbara Kamrath

This is a good product that I like very much. I think it works rather well for a solar product - you just need to be mindful of the solar technology limitations. I have it mounted on the wooded lot, on the wall of garbage box - so it gets light only have the day, and even then it is shaded. However, the sigh still lights for about few hours - I think this is as much as I can hope for.
I can recommend this product.

I got this as a house warming gift. So far in 3 years its still working. yes, I understand that if its around water and sprinklers it is not going to fulfill its best. Great for neighbors not wanting to put our street numbers on their houses. Next one I get I will mount it on a wooden stake higher than my sprinklers. I have had to recharge the batteries once or twice ... not a big deal but it still works!!! Needs full sun to work. So on cloudy or rainy days its not going to work as well... Glad I live where their is direct sunlight everyday... I would get another one in a heart beat! :)

Had two that failed-- One after 4 months and the other after 3 weeks. Did get a manufacturer replacement for the second but its recommendation for return postage was more than half the original cost of the item plus postage. Neat item but unreliable.

Great idea; lit house numbers, no need for wiring. Installed location is key - you want good sun exposure, but some shielding from severe weather, sprinklers, etc.

I just installed a couple weeks ago, in a good spot; and it's working great. It's winter, so the solar availability is less than ideal; yet I've seen that the unit is still brightly lit just before dawn.

Biggest challenge in installation was opening up the unit to put the stick-on plastic numbers on the opalescent plastic background. It has subtle markers on it, to help you align three, four, or five digits; but you still have to be careful to get them straight.

Of course it has its limits. Metal housing looks like it will stand up to weather well, but use common sense; don't put it where sprinklers or downspouts will douse it constantly. I wouldn't expect battery life to exceed 2-3 years; especially in cold climates; but replacement Ni-Cad's are readily available.

It's a great idea and would be a great product if it worked. It doesn't charge. It doesn't light up. It looks nice during the day, but it's useless after dark.
