Book Description

March 21, 2000
Disillusioned with professional life, Rosie, a doctor, unexpectedly inherits a shack on the northern tip of New Zealand's Great Barrier Island and decides it's time to begin anew. She arrives at her home to find she has two neighbors sharing the wilderness -- Red O'Hara, traumatized by horrific wartime experiences working an the Burma railway as a P.O.W. of the Japanese, and Angus McLeod, a retired policeman, who has fled from a society he has as soft and contemptible. Rosie's sudden appearance panics Red and Angus. Both of them fear she will disrupt their neatly ordered lives. And they're right.

Tough, smart, and practical, Rosie soon turn the lives of Red and Angus upside down. And as they work out their relationship, an unexpected threat draws them closer together: the depredations of a big Japanese trawler threaten to destroy their food supply and their environment. As they go to sea in a desperate attempt to prevent the rape of their island paradise, this extraordinary novel of survival and love moves toward a blazing finale reminiscent of another classic: "The African Queen."

Amazon.com Review

"Red O'Hara woke at first light convinced that he should be dead and ashamed that he wasn't."

The year is 1966 and on Great Barrier Island 55 miles off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand, Red O'Hara leads a solitary life. A former World War II POW, Red was hospitalized for a time upon his return and took to heart his doctors' advice to set objectives: "One day Red had surprised them by obliging. He wrote a single word in large childish letters and taped the sheet of paper to the wall above his bed. 'Survive,' was all it said." But even 20 years after the end of the war, he carries his guilt and his terror close; only an unvarying routine of work and exercise stands between him and his hellish memories of the Japanese camps in Burma.

On the island, O'Hara has but two neighbors: the elderly Scottish misanthrope Angus McCleod and Bernie, a dying alcoholic. Life is isolated, simple, and predictable. When Bernie dies, however, he leaves his shack to Rosie Tretheway, a disillusioned doctor, and the sudden arrival of a woman in their remote locale upsets O'Hara's and Angus's hard-won equilibrium. In Sole Survivor Derek Hansen has crafted a story of love, friendship, and adventure as these three prickly characters learn first to get along and then to work together to save the island from the depredations of a commercial Japanese fishing trawler. And in O'Hara, Rosie, and Angus he has given the reader some people to really care about, even as they grow to care about each other. --Alix Wilber --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

A spirited woman invades the solitude and solidarity of two male residents of a New Zealand backwater bay in Australian novelist Hansen's (Psycho Cat) newest mixture of adventure and romance. Abandoning her claustrophobic life as a mainland marketing representative, Rose Tretheway moves into a cottage she has inherited on remote Wreck Bay on the coast of the Great Barrier Island. There she encounters hostile neighbors: Red O'Hara, a former WWII POW in Burma, who is barely functional, and Angus McLeod, a crusty Scottish ex-policeman who retired to the island to write children's books. Tretheway quickly begins a problematic affair with the shell-shocked O'Hara and then indulges in a fling with a local naval officer. Her romantic life gets more complicated when the curmudgeonly McLeod, after trying to force her off the island, does an about-face and tries to talk her into having a child, hoping to live out his parenting fantasies as a secondary father figure behind either O'Hara or the officer. Real life intrudes on the romantic antics in the form of a poaching Japanese fishing trawler that threatens both the livelihood of the inhabitants and the delicate ecology of the island. The narrative chugs along effectively despite some dubious scenes that call into question the motives of the various protagonists, and despite a climax that's downright bizarre. Hansen does a fine job of depicting island life in the 1960s, and he invents an appealingly idiosyncratic cast of characters, but much of this long and ponderously narrated book fails to generate suspense. 4.0 out of 5 stars A book I usually wouldn't give a second glance, however..., September 19, 1999

This review is from: Sole Survivor: A Novel (Hardcover)
Give me Sci-Fi, Action Thrillers, Suspence, but please, no L-o-v-e stories. Well "Sole Survivor" might just change my attitude. Derek Hansen please keep writing. Mr. Hansen put together all the best quailties of my favorite authors: the ability to make reading effortless with a style that carries one along on a tidal current, creating characters who become real people, and weaving it all together into an unforgetable tale. It's the kind of artful story you'll want more of. The best non-science fiction book I've read in ages!

This review is from: SOLE SURVIVOR: A Novel (Paperback)
I was so attracted to the previews of this book, I mistakenly bought 2 of them. The plot, story line and book cover are all enticing. I was intrigued by the story focusing on people attempting to be self sufficient in a harsh yet sensitive environment. I could see where one depending on their surroundings for sustenance would be aggressively protective if that environment was being threatened.

I will be straight up; the author is not always sensitive when it comes to the way he handles his women. He is condescending and sexist, but, this is in character with an old navy officer. Is this appropriate? Who cares..it is a good story . Besides, one could argue that Rosie, the female member of the trio living on this barren habitat, is quite comfortable with her sexuality and is comfortable acting on her sexuality.

So, if you can spare yourself the temptation to force your sexual and sexist issues on this story, you will find yourself vastly entertained and in for a wonderful adventure. I loved the story and wish for a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Island Paradise Invaded By A Newcomer!!!, April 25, 2005
This review is from: SOLE SURVIVOR: A Novel (Paperback)
In this book the reader is introduced to three characters, Bernie, the dying alcoholic, Red the War Veteran and Angus the Scottish writer. Upon Bernie's death his shack on Great Barrier Island is inherited by former Doctor Rosie Trethewey. Red and Angus are both deeply troubled by this sudden and unexpected invasion into their reclusive world.Rosie is determined to make a new life for herself on the island in spite of what Red or Angus do to discourage her. This book is a wondrous read about 3 loners who find out that they do need each other after all.Derek Hansen is a masterful storyteller and weaves his tale with a deft hand.
