2.0 out of 5 stars BUZZZZZZZ...
I was very pleased with this system for the first month or so I owned it (better speakers would make it much better though..); However, shortly after that it began making a loud intermittent buzzing noise. This noise ranges from almost imperceptible, to so loud it drowns out almost all other audio output. It seems to be coming from the satelite speakers only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, February 5, 2004
This review is from: SONY HT-6600DP Home Theater In A Box (Electronics)
Let me start by saying that I am not an expert on home electronics, but after my boyfriend and I decided to buy a home theater system, we really did our homework. This system is great because the receiver and the DVD are separate units, so if one dies, your entire system is not rendered useless. Also the speakers run on standard speaker wire, so you can replace speakers without having to purchase a new system (unlike many of the other packaged systems).

The quality of the sound is great. We live in a two-bedroom apartment and cannot test the upper limits, but the mid range is great for filling the place up with rich sound. With our previous stereo if I could hear it in the back bedroom I knew it was too loud. That is not the case with our Sony.

The remote takes a little getting used to and doesn't fully control other units. For example, you can program it for the cable box, but it does not allow you to retrieve the program menus. You can fully control the DVD player with the receiver remote, but it does require reading the manual.

My boyfriend's input to this review is "It's big and silver, therefore cool."

All in all, I think this unit is definitely worth the money. If you are looking for a nice unit that doesn't break the bank - this is the one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best available option for music/dvd lovers, August 20, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: SONY HT-6600DP Home Theater In A Box (Electronics)
This is the best available option for music/dvd lovers. By providing a seperate receiver and dvd player the sound quality on this system has improved by ten folds over the old sony dream systems. The seperately powered sub-woofer adds an extra quality to the sound. Its easy to setup though you must read the manual before setting it up. I have loved it ever since I've bought it and will recommend it as a must buy for music lovers out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A big step up from pro-logic, May 27, 2004

This review is from: SONY HT-6600DP Home Theater In A Box (Electronics)
Wow! Our previous system was a Kenwood Dolby ProLogic receiver (100W/ch) w/ Bose 301 front speakers (we used "emulated" center channel) and some generics for the rear. And we thought it was nice. We were not prepared for this. After hooking things up we watched Jurassic Park. When the T-Rex roared you knew it, even if you were in a different room. On the other side of things, you can hear people speaking very clearly. I tend to agree that the manual could be a little more user-friendly but I had no trouble (mainly because I only hooked up the included DVD changer audio to the receiver {using digital via included coax}, the component video went straight to the TV and the speakers hooked to the receiver.) I have no more use for my equalizer, cd player, vcr, tape deck, etc. but there are plenty of hook-ups for these devices.
Mostly everything is set-up correctly right from the box. Just make sure you configure the DVD to turn on DTS and Dolby Digital. I also suggest using the digital coax (orange jacks) for connecting the DVD audio to the receiver and getting better speaker wires for the speakers (lamp cord from HomeDepot or Lowes is 100x better than the scrawny included wires)

4.0 out of 5 stars The system is excellent, but not its manual and remote., January 25, 2004

After looking at several home-theater-in-a-box systems, I purchased the Sony HT6600DP given the several A/V inputs/outputs, component video and S-video inputs. The THD of the system is also quite low. Before you buy the system, I strongly urge you to go and look up the specs. on Sony's website itself and convince yourself that this is indeed the system you want. Several cheaper systems with lower RMS wattage or connections do exist.
(Don't rely on the specs given by retailers -- I often found discrepancies in their specs.)

The system's fidelity and flexibility are indeed excellent and well worth the effort in setting it up. However, the following issues were simply neglected by Sony:

1. The product manual is a sad excuse for a manual -- step by step instructions are simply not there, and the material is presented in a very incoherent manner.

2. The remote keys referred to are not well illustrated diagrammatically in the manual. A new user, unfamiliar with the key layout on the remote, may have to scan through all the keys in the remote to figure out what the manual is saying.

3. The remote key layout is itself quite 'amateurish' and seems to have been done in haste.

On the whole, the system is great. But, be a little ready for some extra effort in the beginning.

I bough this system about a month ago and I must say that I am liking it quite a bit. With a few exceptions the setup was easy. The instructions that come with the system is somewhat convoluted but overall clear. The actual operation of the receiver is so easy even a trained monkey could figure it out. It is feature rich and comes with nice connectivity for most of the things you might want to connect to it. The speakers and the subwoofer are more then adequate and add to the overall effectiveness off the system. As for the DVD player itself it's a pretty nice one. The 5 disk carousel is nice and convenient. Overall it is easy to switch between disks and it does have multi disk resume. The only real pet peeve that I have about the DVD player is that it dos not have menu navigation controls on the player face; this forces one to use the remote. Other then this I would def buy this system again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!, February 19, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SONY HT-6600DP Home Theater In A Box (Electronics)
This system is well worth the money. It really does sound fantastic. I have a large apartment and this baby fills it with no problem. The changer played every disc I threw at it (cd-r, cdrw, dvd r+) with no problem. I haven't been able to test out the progressive scan yet, but when my HDTV is delivered next week, I'm sure I won't be disappointed. I highly recommend this system.

Update: I got my new TV and let me just say that watching DVD's with Progressive scan and through component video cables is unbelievable! This system was one great buy!

I've owned this system for almost a year and find it is extremely versitile and does most everything I want. The only drawback is that it has no turntable inputs. That's right, I ahve an old AR turntable that I want to connect. Oh well.

I won this system in a raffle at my company's Holiday Party. It looked great in the box but when I actully set it up, the sound was amazing. Older DVD's come alive again when played on this system and new releases are like being in the theater watching the movie. 5 stars to Sony!!!

I have a friend with a different Sony system and he has a similar problem with his subwoofer. (Maybe this is a problem with Sony products in general?) He tried to get it serviced and was told there was nothing wrong with it. I hope I have better luck, as this can really be a great system on the rare occasion that I can hear it over the sometimes thundering buzz!

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy from Sony!!!, August 17, 2004
This review is from: SONY HT-6600DP Home Theater In A Box (Electronics)
This is the 3rd home theather Sony branded I have. I bought this unit less than a year ago and the display went dead suddenly. Now Sony is charging me $200 to have it fixed. What a disappointment for a company that claims to be best in class. Never will do business with them again.
