Better than DLP,
This review is from: SONY KDF60XBR950 60-Inch LCD Projection TV (Electronics)
I bought this Sony LCD over the Samsung DLP. The picture is sharper and brighter. Also, sony accepts 480 which almost all of the channels on cable support. The Samsung doesn't support 480, therefore you will see pixelation especially when you watch sports.
I saw the super bowl on the Sony and it was magnificent.

Absolutely Stunning - The Ears Look Better in the Home,

This review is from: SONY KDF60XBR950 60-Inch LCD Projection TV (Electronics)
I have the 50" version of this set and am EXTREMELY happy with the purchase. I had high expectations for this TV, all of which have been exceeded.
The high definition picture is remarkable. 1080i via component or HDMI looks remarkable. I've seen many an HDTV, but this is easily the best picture I've ever seen. The dynamic range, accurate color, and sharpness are unparalleled. After having it for two months, I still am stunned every time I turn it on. I am using Comcast cable for reference. One major concern for me was the quality of the standard definition picture, given the unfortunate high percentage of TV still in SD. To my surprise, the SD picture is very very good. I compared a number of TVs in this catergory in the store, but found it difficult because most stores' SD signal is split a million times and stinks. I can tell you that in the home it looks very good. DVD's also look superb. 480p and 480i looks remarkable, as good as a DVD can look. One unexpected thing did happen though... after seeing movies in 1080i HD from HBO-HD and StarzHD, I can't wait for the new HD DVD or Bluray discs to hit the market... the picture for HD movies is absolutely stunning. Watching Shark Tales in HD is an experience. Lastly, we almost didn't purchase this TV because of the side speaker "dumbo ears". I hated them in the store, but in the house they really are MUCH less obvious. I actually really like the way the TV looks on our corner stand... given the short depth and the width, it looks like a huge LCD panel instead of a RPTV. Buy it, you won't regret it!

Excellent TV,

I've had this tv for a month now and I loved it. I used to have Samsung 63 incher DLP tv but I returned that one due to its black level issues and patchy colors on some DVDs. The Sony totally blew away the competition, I'm glad I got it though it costs more than DLP tv. The color on this puppy is crystal clear, almost rival the plasma plus it's extra bright (XBR) unlike other LCD tvs. Make sure you buy the extended warranty on this one not because it's not reliable but because it's a big investment. My extended warranty doesn't cover the bulb but I heard Circuit City's does. The bulb costs about 150-200 bucks and avg lifetime is about 3 years or depending on how much you watch your tv. I had Monster component cable hooked up for my DVD, RCA cables give you less quality on the pictures I heard. Next stop is DVI cable, but you need DVD player that supports DVI. I don't know how DVI is going to improve the performance because it think it's already pretty good. Side note: get good quality DVD, I just got a DVD with "dual layer format: matted" quality labeled to it and it's awful.

This is as good as it gets.....,

I can only echo the above reviews. We have owned this set for three months now, and it is absolutely exceptional in picture quality, even sitting off-center, 6' to the side. It is very unlike all the others. Don't waste your money, just to save a few hundred dollars on this big investment! You will regret it for years. The contrast, focus, color saturation is A+++. The specifications are incorrect as to the speakers. This is from the Sony site: * Audio: * 5W + 2 + 20W 5 Speaker System, includes built-in sub woofer. In a smaller room, the audio is rich and full, surround-like, thanks to the digital processing. ***UPDATE 7/2006---Now one year from our purchase date, absolutely no trouble, TV is working perfectly. In fact, compared to even newer, more expensive Sony sets friends have bought, this still beats or is equal to what they have!

I have little to add here. You really, really won't save money buying a lesser set. You'll be rebuying sooner if you do.
I refused to buy for a long time, not finding any tv up to my probably unreasonable demands for an investment like this. This tv exceeded all of my expectations. My only concern-- We watch movies but not enough tv to encourage us to purchase cable or satellite service. We have only an attic antenna so I was anticipating a pretty terrible broadcast tv picture. I was convinced that we would not be using this set for what little tv we do watch. It took me two days before I realized that the HD tuner built into the set is so powerful that it pulled in broadcast HD and DT signals for all channels in our area and the picture quality is absolutely incredible. Who knew?

Beware: Defective Optical Block,
By Early Adopter "Edward" (Springfield, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SONY KDF60XBR950 60-Inch LCD Projection TV (Electronics)
I purchased this tv in November 2005 and became aware of the known issue of the optical block failing after my purchase was completed. I crossed my fingers and waited for the green blob to show up but instead I was one of the lucky ones with black backgrounds showing up as dark blue. Now I'm afraid if I have them install an optical block (the warranty was extended due to a class action lawsuit) I'll just have the same problem a year or two from now. This was a very bad $4,200 investment and I would encourage everyone to do a search for SXRD and Optical Block on the internet to see what I mean. Sony discontinued manufacture of these tvs in 2007.

I paid [...] for this TV and have had it for just over 5 years. Never had a problem with it. It is only limited today by its not having an HDMI input, therefore your HD viewing by BluRay or HD Cable is limited to 720p. I keep looking at the new TVs of this size, all boasting 120 nad 240HZ etc., 1080P etc. I personally want to change TVs one day so that I have HDMI for my HD video camera, but I just can't,... I have to say that the picture of this 5 year old TV, limited to 720p, still blows away the pictures on almost all TVs I have seen (except for a much more expensive Pioneer Elite - now not sold any longer). I recommend this TV to anyone. OH, another thing to consider is the SD viewing. The processors in this TV (on probably in XBRs to today) is so good that crappy SD cable channels often look like crystal clear HD. Many of the new TVs (to me) look like crap in standard DEF. Just FYI, you pay for the processing.

DO NOT BUY THIS SONY TV MODEL !!!,

This review is from: SONY KDF60XBR950 60-Inch LCD Projection TV (Electronics)
Sony TV model KDF60XBR950 has an inbred defective "optical block or engine" which will manifest
itself after about 3-4 years of use. A bright neon-like blue line will appear at the bottom of the screen and will gradually get wider & invade the whole screen image. After multiple tries Sony "Customer Relations" (that's a joke)refuses to admit that there is anything wrong with this model even though there is plenty of evidence to the contrary. They refuse to extend warranty on this $550.00 part + labor even though they were aware of a problem because they did extend a warranty for a short period in June 2008. Please be aware of this defective Sony product and probably others and make special note of their total lack of concern when you contact their so-called "Customer Relations" Dept. Its true name ought to be "We couldn't care less" Dept. |
