Whatever you do, do NOT, we repeat do NOT buy this model before having read our comments. The WM-FX521 (just like its more recent twin the WM-FX522 and who knows which other WM-FX models) seems to suffer from a very annoying, hidden defect, apparently involving the engine which provides the power for the cassette-tape.

SONY, of course, does not want to recognize the problem, and in their last letter dismissed every further communication regarding the particular WM-FX521 and WM-FX522 models we have tested and returned for repair.

As to the specific problem with these models (and, as said, which other models?) is that the engine produces an unusual amount of noise while playing. This is audible from the outside, but even more annoyingly, when you put on the headphones. There is a constant drone-like noise in the background which is VERY audible when you push play but turn down the volume to a (very) low level. Naturally, this has nothing to do with the usual tape hiss. We have compared the model to a more than 5-year old and $30-paid-for Sony WM-FX171 which has been in action almost every day since our purchase and this one does NOT have the same defect. At each occasion, we have specified this to SONY, but they never took notice of this what we believe crucial comparison, nor did they seem to have the intention of comparing it to other models as we suggested in our telephone calls.

At this moment, more than a year after our initial purchase, the WM-FX521 has spent 2/3 of the time with Sony and their dealer, and 1/3 with us. We have neither been reimbursed, or been given a repaired model. Even worse, we are left without any of these 2 options. NO walkman, NO money back! It is obvious that we have changed our strategy and that we WILL get satisfaction from Sony.

A major like Sony should NOT be able to get away with this and they will NOT either. Your help may show them that if they don't care, at least WE do.
