5.0 out of 5 stars Best writer I've ever owned.
Keep this in mind about externals, right off the bat: you generally cannot boot from them, so if your system needs bootable CD ability, you need to get the internal version of this item, or a low-cost read-only backup.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware of Sony DVD burners!!!
My Sony DVD drive is not even 2 years old and has now stopped working. For me to get it fixed, it will cost me $20 for them to troubleshoot it and $170 to fix it!!! That is more than it costs to buy a new burner. The warranty is only 1 year. Their customer service is also horrible if you ever have a problem. I just want to warn people before they go buying Sony...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best writer I've ever owned., July 20, 2003

Keep this in mind about externals, right off the bat: you generally cannot boot from them, so if your system needs bootable CD ability, you need to get the internal version of this item, or a low-cost read-only backup.

Now, caveat aside, I've owned no faster or more reliable writer than this. The Firewire *and* USB 2.0 option lets me take this to any PC manufactured in the last three years and do my work. Emergency backup of a system? No problem. Burn DVDs? No problem, and the firmware is even flashable for future refinements.

The software bundle is typical Sony: abundant, useful, right on. Still, Nero is the only software I'll use, and it has no problem handling this drive. The Sony-bundled DVD player software is pretty slick, nice options, skinnable.

One thing I'd rather see is the eject button above the tray, but that's a minor point. It's a solid device, some bumpers on either side to help cushion it in a workspace, and a clean design.

If you're going external, this is my only choice. Internal, to be honest, I'd probably go with its sister drive, the 500A. Sony's done it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Compatible with Macintosh and PC computers - NOT!, August 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: SONY DVD/RW/R i.LINK/USB2.0 DVD/CD ReWritable Drive (Electronics)
The description of the "Features" of this DVD burner states that it is "...Compatible with Macintosh and PC computers". After purchasing the drive from another vendor (who described it in a similar fashion), I found out from Sony technical. support that the drive is not compatible with Mac OS, only Windows. The Manuals were also for the incorrect model number (DRX-510), but Sony stated that there is no difference between the two drives, only the software.
I have not tested the drive as of yet, because it was purchased for my sister, who uses only the Macintosh Operating System. Although the drive looks like a quality piece of equipment, I can only give it three stars because of the misinformation within the description.

I have owned this drive for more than two years and I must say it is an excellent product. I have recorded several types of data on DVD with it and I have no complaints. In fact, I'm very happy with it and I think it's been a blessing have had bought this great DVD recorder.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst SONY product ever, December 14, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SONY DVD/RW/R i.LINK/USB2.0 DVD/CD ReWritable Drive (Electronics)
I bought this Sony DRX-500ULX in order to record my videos from a digital camera, also SONY, connected to a SONY VAIO, and in just a few words DON'T BUY THIS, it needs 20 GB of space in hard disk and if you burn a dvd probably you can't play it in your home dvd.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Support - Can't Read any DVD+RW Media, June 3, 2003

What a piece of junk. I recommended this product to a client a few months ago based on a variety of good reviews. they waited a while to order it from another supplier and didn't call me in until the 15 day return period expired. What a nightmare. After hours of wasted time on the phone with support, they "escalated" my problem and similar to other customer experiences, no return phone call. Now the client is stuck with a dead drive that will cost them more in my time to fix than it will to throw it away.

Congratulations, Sony, on lowering the mark for product support and customer support. My first CD-R drive was a piece of junk sony in 1995 and this will be the last I ever recommend or buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Burns DVD's but not CD's, September 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: SONY DVD/RW/R i.LINK/USB2.0 DVD/CD ReWritable Drive (Electronics)
DVD burning works fine, but it's unable to burn CD's. I get constant 'buffer underrun' messages. I'm using the latest firmware and software - but still no luck.
