There's no reason to buy elegant winter boots if they're not also going to keep your feet warm. The main point of a winter boot, after all, is to have something cozier than your standard city boot. So Sorel crafted the Women's Cate the Great Boot with a vulcanized rubber shell, waterproof suede, and thick insulating felt inside. The result? A luxurious-looking boot that will keep your feet warm in temps as frigid as -25 degrees Fahrenheit. You may not be able to decide what you appreciate more: the boot's fine aesthetic details like a faux fur cuff and lovely stitching, or its seam-sealed waterproof construction. But don't worry. You don't have to pick your favorite feature; you can just adore them all, all winter long.

Having wide feet, I needed wide boots (especially with the myriad sock-layers a non-Canadian in Canada needs) and this boot delivers. It's surprisingly cute; the Amelia style is more of a mature-elegant look, but this here is kind of an adventurey look. I tried on a handful of Sorel boots before picking these, and even over a year later I'm still really happy with the decision.
The knee-height is another great feature. Who knew these snows would get so deep? There have been a bunch of times that the bus has delivered me into a snow bank and while people alongside me are picking their way gingerly through, I just walk on and don't even notice. A few times fluffy snow would get caught under the flap connecting the upper to the rubber section, but don't worry -- either a bit of stomping (or eventual melting for those disinclined to stomp) will get that out and your boot will be fine.
In terms of traction, they're alright. I don't feel like any sort of ice-gecko in them, but they are a level above my regular-weather (as opposed to Canadian Winter) boots. I have eaten salt/gravel/ice a total of once in them over two winters (Winter '11-'12, and winter '12-Jan '13), and that was on ice so perfect that it appeared to be Zamboni'd. I'm not one to fall very often, so if ice seems to have it in for you, I'd recommend looking for some over-the-shoe grippy things.
In terms of warmth, they're pretty good.Read more ›
4 instead of 5 because they are a soft boot - feels like I'm wearing a hightop moccasin, i.e no ankle support and the flat bottom provides no arch support. I can add a bit of arch support, but can't do much about the ankle support. That said, the boots I returned fit well for walking but were extremely hard to get in to. I wear waterproof hiking boots and gators for snowshoeing so these are for short walks, errand running, getting the mail and should be fine. I wouldn't want to be in them and on my feet all day, though.
Oh, they are cute as heck :)!!!
