Book Description

Mental health professionals often struggle to understand spirituality and the role it plays in their clients' lives. Many therapists would like to take spiritual issues into account, and to incorporate them, as they do with other areas of patients' lives, into their overall approach, but feel they lack the training or competency to do so effectively.

In this concise, thoughtful, and practical book, clinician Carlton Cornett describes how to integrate the issues of spirituality into everyday practice.

Cornett addresses the needs of therapists and counselors who treat both clients committed to their religious beliefs, and those who initially might not identify spirituality as an area of struggle, but for whom spiritual issues are real, yet hidden, sources of distress. He shows therapists how to open the door to the spiritual dimension in their work through cases from his practice, and demonstrates the impact and relevance of religion and spirituality on the clinical process.

4.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring look into returning to the soul of therapy, September 10, 1999
This review is from: The SOUL OF PSYCHOTHERAPY: RECAPTURING THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION IN THE THERAPEUTIC ENCOUNTER (Hardcover)
Carlton Cornett, in this text concerning the therapist's role in discussing spirituality with clients as an effective part of treatment, comes from both a psychoanalytic and constructivist perspective. Although he is certainly biased in those ways, the insights of this book may be applied across psychological schools. He challenges the psychological community to continue returning to the soul as an essential part of the therapeutic alliance, but he does not lose sight of the sophisticated nature of the science of psychology. Readers may be offended by a proliferation of anti-Christian remarks, but these remarks also provide insight into the dynamics that he discusses. All in all, I recommend this book to inspire, challenge, and improve the therapeutic environment for ALL members of the social services.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dynamic psychotherapy approach to spirituality, September 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The SOUL OF PSYCHOTHERAPY: RECAPTURING THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION IN THE THERAPEUTIC ENCOUNTER (Hardcover)
I found the volume to be wonderful. Carlton Cornett have written another book on a very pertinent topic.  The spirit of "these times" requires all therapists to look again at our clients and their souls.  I feel this book is long overdue, working within a dynamic framework he presents topics that for far too long have been monopolized by writers who are too "pop" and clique. Truly, this is a book that professional therapists will find useful in their practice.
