When you think of a fighting game guide, you don't normally think it should be anywhere close to being this big. And even more than that, you don't generally tend to think that the guide is really all that necessary. Soul Calibur V isn't a too terribly complex game, yet this guide is extremely in depth in a lot of areas, covering every nook and cranny of Soul Calibur V. It's in depth. Sometimes a little too much.

So let's get this out of the way. The guide is big. It's also a hardback. It's so big that if you threw at someone on the street you'd probably kill them (or at the very least, incapacitate them for several days). Generally speaking a lot of guides that are so big usually get that way because there's a lot of unused space on a page or there are unusually large screenshots (or it's double spaced) Bradygames has an enormous habit of inflating their guides. So naturally upon looking at this guide it was hard to discern what was fluff and what wasn't. Turns out, nothing here is. This is truly a guide that has so much info in it you'll be suffering from an overload. It's amazing that the guide is as well organized as it is.

The guide begins with the "How to Play" section where it shows you just about everything you need to know about the game system. Here it'll help you understand all the basic concepts of Soul Calibur V as well. But it doesn't stop there. It pretty much tells you how to exploit some of the games mechanics as well as even going so far as to explain why the training mode might be a good place for beginners to start, and demonstrating what it can actually teach the player. It's mostly about explaining how to take control of the game's various mechanics. Newcomers, especially, should definitely start here.

The Soul Calibur V guide by Future Press is, by far, one of the best strategy guides I've ever purchased. This colossal sized book has something for everyone. From the casual SC fan to the hardened veterans of the series, there is guaranteed to be something in this guide you will find useful.

For the Casual Fighting Game Fan:
-This book covers the basic mechanics of the game in the utmost detail possible. It also has a section explaining each character's best moves and combos.

For the Completionist:
-The "Extras" section alone will probably warrant a purchase of this guide. This section explains how to unlock all characters, costumes, achievements and more. If it can be unlocked in the game, you'll find it here.

For the Collector:
-This book has an amazing hard cover decorated with some fine Soul Calibur V artwork. There is also artwork of the various characters in each character's respective section.

For the Hard Core/Tournament Players:
-While I'm not a hardcore gamer myself, I believe this guide's extensive frame data of each move in the game will have hardcore/tourney players salivating at the mouth!

I come from 2D fighters like Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Street Fighter IV. Needless to say, my experience with 3D fighters is pretty much non-existent. So, when I hoped online for the first time, I had my butt handed to me non-stop.

So, I finally purchased this guide and read through the mechanics of the game and my character's personalized section. This taught me the in and outs of the game. The rules by which I had to play by and all the most potent moves of my character. After spending some time in the training room, I hoped back online to a triumphant return. I was actually winning matches!

I've been playing fighting games competitively for nearly 15 years now, and I own precisely three strategy guides. Let's face it - most fighting game guides aren't very good. However, this guide has become my fourth. Other reviews have the details, but it's incredibly thorough and has the all-important frame data. On top of that, it's beautiful to look at.

On the negative side, a few minor errors have already surfaced, and the binding and paper aren't quite as nice as they could be. But it's still an amazing guide that all serious players should own. If you're on the fence, just make the leap and buy it. Even if you don't find it useful (note: this will not happen), you'll be supporting the production of serious strategy guides. Here's to a future filled with more guides like this and fewer of the oh-so-common pathetic ones that barely pass as manual replacements.

Seriously, every guide out there should take note and see what these guys have done. I've never seen a more thorough, well written guide in all my years of fighting games. Book starts out with a "how to play" chapter, which doesn't just go over basics, but breaks down the game's systems, offensive changes, defensive changes and even explains what "frames" are, talks about hit boxes, everything. It's a great guide for hardcore players as well as being written friendly enough and careful enough for new players. Each character is broken down into EVERY possible move, defensive positioning, offensive tips...etc. The end of the book contains every unlockable clothing/weapon/achievement/trophy requirement and photo. AMAZING effort and an amazing package for any fighting game fan. Just buy it.
