Book Description

A well-prepared soup is nourishing and satisfying, prepared for those we love. It is versatile: humbly served as a main course, or elegantly served to add interest to a meal. Chef Jen (of New Deli Café fame) shares over thirty favorite recipes; follow them to the letter, or learn techniques and then improvise.

“Soup’s On” features whole-food ingredients and simplified techniques to save flavors, time, and nutrients. Whatever juncture you’re at, most of these recipes can be modified to suit various dietary needs. Thanks to natural ingredients that don’t come from a can or a box, they can easily be customized, for low-salt, preservative-free, chemical-free eating. Many are gluten-free, using vegetables as thickeners instead of flour, and can work for paleo diets too.

Can we prepare everything from scratch? It’s not unfathomable. We can take advantage of methods, we can put "leftovers" to work, we can freeze extra for a busy day. And we can discover that it is so worth it!

Food trends come and go, but homemade never goes out of style. Make a pot of soup. Make some memories. And enjoy good food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should have ten stars. December 6, 2013

If possible, I would give this book 10 stars. Before each recipe is a discussion of the soup. At the end of the book there is a great deal of good additional information. I learned much from this book and I have been making soup for nearly 60 years. This is worth you time and money.

The kinds of soup in here are not what I was looking for. If you have no cookbooks, no cooking experience and want to make soup, this is a fine guide. Just wasn't for me.

More About the Author

Jen's kitchen exploits started with a scrap paper "cookbook" at age 10. By age 17, she was making soups and simple meals for her musician husband. Urban homesteading stretched paltry paychecks, as Jen canned and pickled the fruits of her organic garden. On to establishing her own food business at age 25, Jen juggled raising kids with developing menus and simplifying recipes. Mentoring young employees at The New Deli as they've developed kitchen skills, Jennifer has seen new generations learn to prepare real meals with fresh ingredients. More recipes in the works!
