5.0 out of 5 stars High quality product from very good manufacturer!, October 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Source Naturals is a company that offers high quality products at prices that are affordable by mere humans like myself. I've yet to purchase any of their products and come away feeling disappointed. I do not work for this company, nor am i a professional reviewer. I express my honest opinion and share information. I don't work for Amazon either, but must say that i deeply appreciate how much more affordable a product becomes when you subscribe to receive it at regular intervals. Now on to the explanation about the importance of Manganese.

Manganese is best taken in chelate form, because this is how it is stored within the human body. Ergo, your system does not have to output amino acids to process the Manganese, which makes this an optimal product. The dosage of 15mg is also optimal: this is the amount that is typically stored within the human body when one is not deficient (or overabundant) in Manganese.

Anyone who eats a lot of processed foods, relies on the usual fare from fast food emporiums, microwaves & eats even the healthiest organic frozen dinners on a regular basis, relies on canned vegetables (so long, nutrients!) or lives on a diet of meat and potatoes and pastries NEEDS to pay attention, here. The majority of people who are Vegetarian, Fructarian (Fruitarian) or Vegan will likely not suffer a Manganese deficiency. However, even if your diet is optimal and you are in a very high-pressure stressful job and/or home environment and are taking prescription medications on a regular basis for any chronic condition, particularly one involving insomnia, chronic pain, depressed mood and/or anxiety, it's a good idea to take Manganese Chelate.

This is not one I take every night because we need to use metals cautiously to achieve a proper balance. Too much can cause toxicity. This rarely occurs, but it is important to point this out in regard to ALL metals. People with liver conditions need to pay PARTICULAR attention to the potential for the toxicity of Manganese and probably should not take ANY Manganese supplement without having a full blood workup and consultation with their Physician. If you have any chronic liver condition, you're likely better off getting Manganese from a healthy diet than acquiring it via supplements. If you suffer Iron deficiency anemia, proceed with caution regarding Manganese as it is known to deplete both iron and copper within the body BUT, conversely, helps the body absorb iron and PREVENT anemia. Unless you are a biochemist, best for you with anemia to consult your Doctor. The idea is to achieve an optimal balance rather than throwing your body entirely out of whack. Now that I've given you many of the caveats, I will explain the benefits.

Manganese is about energy and has a most definite impact on mood. Your brain functions more efficiently when you've achieved optimum levels of Manganese in your body. If you suffer from "brain fog" or feel that you are not on top of your game, Manganese will make you feel better. When your mind is functioning at full capacity, you will be less prone to feeling depressed or anxious. It helps us metabolize fatty acids, proteins and carbohydrates and, used properly in combination with a better diet, can lower cholesterol levels. It is key to healthy bones and reproductive organs.

Women who are pregnant or lactating require an increased intake of Manganese. Menopausal or post-Menopausal women need Manganese as well as Calcium sources or supplements to stave off or halt any increase in osteoporosis and maintain sex drive. If you are receiving the standard HRT, it is important to consult your Doctor about the use of Manganese. If you are managing menopause via diet, herbs and supplements, do not overlook Manganese. If you have broken a bone or are suffering from age-onset osteoarthritis from bones broken during your wild youth, Manganese boosts collagen production and is strongly recommended. Take it in moderation along with Glucosamine & Chondroitin, if you are deriving benefit from this regimen. A close friend with aggressive osteoarthritis who did not derive any benefits from a two-month regimen of Glucosamine & Chondroitin and has been managing his pain via the "usual" barrage of medications has felt considerably better after taking one Manganese Chelate tablet every other day for a week.

IF YOU ARE DIABETIC or have issues with maintaining consistent blood sugar levels, Manganese is essential and will help regulate blood sugar levels. Thus, it is recommended for those who suffer from "brittle diabetes" that is stubborn and unresponsive to diet, exercise and insulin injections. It helps to maintain healthy nerves..need I mention neuropathy? If you have wounds that don't seem to heal or are healing more slowly than they have in past, you'll benefit from an increase in this metal. Collagen is important internally and externally. Skin, hair and nails: all benefit. Manganese assists the body in utilizing supplements like Vitamin B1, Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

If you think you're "going gray" too early & are concerned about the effects of free radicals as you age and believe your skin makes you look older than you are, think Manganese. It also helps support your immune system and is compatible with Echinacea and Vitamin C..and Zinc. Zinc taken alone causes a decrease in Manganese which can result in deficiency. Thus, if you use Zinc lozenges, you'll need to increase your Manganese via diet or use of a supplement. If you loathe fresh spinach or anything resembling it, are allergic to nuts, only eat canned fruit cocktail, run screaming from the sight of Tofu and think Edamame used to be half of a Vegas lounge act, this supplement is strongly recommended.

I am not talking "panacea" here. What I'm telling you is that Manganese is ONE of the key metals that many of us are running a bit low on and, rather than rushing out and blowing big bucks for Botox or asking your Doctor to prescribe the latest addictive antidepressant with hundreds of side-effects that roll past you while you watch the commercial about the woman whose life has been "fixed" at last walking hand-in-hand with her delighted hubby whilst the family dog romps at their feet: unless you're at the end of your rope, please try Manganese Chelate first.

Here is how I take it and why: the long-term benefits are obvious. In the short term, about 2 - 3x per week i take one of these pills along with my nightly dose of L-Tryptophan w/P5P (P5P being an optimal form of Vitamin B6) and Vitamin C plus D3, washed down with Soy milk (yes, I'm aware that soy is a source of Manganese, among other things) because I'm lactose intolerant and need the extra Calcium and twice a week add a full-spectrum B Vitamin. The reason: my mind "works overtime" and i tend to be thinking or researching information when i ought to be asleep. I don't suffer from mania..just a bit too "Type A" for my own good.

I was prescribed a certain "safe" sleeping medication touted to be non-addictive when in fact, it is just as addictive if not more addictive than Valium. When I found that the normal dosage of the sleeping medication was losing its effectiveness, the temptation was to ask my Doctor to prescribe MORE of it. Meanwhile, I'm already walking around in a bit of a brain fog as it is for half the day after I wake up. This is not SUPPOSED to be one of the side-effects of the medication I'm taking. In fact, this is why this medication has gotten so much positive PR: No next-day drowsiness. (yeah, right). Fortunately, I don't "sleep-drive" or "sleep-eat" or "sleep-chainsaw-carve".

Rather than upping my intake of aforementioned addictive sleeping pill, i did what i normally do: research. I was well aware of the benefits of L-Tryptophan plus co-enzyme B6, but this alone wasn't quite doing the trick. Adding C + D3 helped a bit. Inclusion of one Manganese Chelate was astonishingly effective. I am able to get to sleep more rapidly, sleep like a rock and the next day, in spite of still taking my usual single pharmaceutical "sleep aid", I'm not wandering in a fog and feeling desolate about myself, nor anxious because "i just can't seem to get it together." The next step? Slowly following a titration schedule to remove myself from dependency upon this pharmaceutical. I'll likely add some herbal tea with calming effects, exercise more often early in the day now that I have the energy to DO it and just tough it out.

Again, i ask that you don't simply take my word for this: ask your Doctor and/or do the research and check for any potentially negative interactions or side-effects. Do NOT overdo it! When it comes to Metals in particular it pays to proceed with caution. If you're a heavy drinker of alcoholic bevs, Manganese Chelate might be contraindicated as your liver is already taxed to the limit. You would *think* a Vegetarian (more of a Vegan, really) who seeks out organic foods and has a more balanced diet than many Americans would not have problems with Manganese deficiency. Think again. A combination of stress, morning caffeine, a "driven" personality who occasionally imbibes in too much natural cane sugar and/or organic dark chocolate and uses pharmaceutical intervention for sleep? it took its toll. This is a GREAT supplement that has helped me enormously and i was able to acquire it at an incredibly reasonable price. It is my hope that by sharing this manuscript of information that others out there may benefit.
