Hyperdrive Space Memory Card Backup Device, March 18, 2010
This review is from: SPACE 40GB Memory Card Backup Device (Personal Computers)
I am very disappointed in this product. While my original unit was still on warranty it would no longer charge, either by AC power or USB cable connected to my computer. I returned it to the camera store where I had purchased it, and it was returned to the manufacturer for repairs. It sat on a shelf in the repair dept. for approx. SIX MONTHS! Finally it was replaced - supposedly with a 120 GB unit as an apology from the camera store (but not from the manufacturer) for the length of time it took to attempt to repair it. Unfortunately the 120 GB unit does not even hold 40 GB! Now the new unit has done the same thing as the first one. I can no longer download cards to it -- or access the files I currently have stored on it!
I thought perhaps the battery needed to be replaced, but I have not been able to locate a replacement battery - and, in fact, my unit is apparently no longer manufactured.
I would be hesitant to purchase another product from this company. I consider this product a waste of my money, and wish I had waited to purchase something of higher quality. Do your research - I didn't, and have regretted is ever since. Even after the first unit was replaced, I never had much confidence in the second unit - with good reason, as it turns out!

Quick and easy way to back up your photos in the field, October 6, 2009
This review is from: SPACE 40GB Memory Card Backup Device (Personal Computers)
I'm paranoid about losing my photos, and quite rightly I should. I bought the Hyperdrive Space (just the device itself) and added a 120gb drive.
On the default settings, I can back up an 8gb card in about 15 minutes. The device is rated for 1gb/min, but you'd have to have faster memory cards that support that data transfer rate along with adjust some settings. I'm lazy, so 1gb every 2 minutes isn't going to hurt me that badly.
The HyperDrive Space supports an insane amount of memory cards, including xD and Sony Memory Stick. For me, I only care about the SDHC and CF cards.
The battery life is amazing - I've been able to copy 90+ gb before the battery runs out, and it can be recharged via USB as well. It also can be mounted as a drive, so when you get to a computer, you can drag your files over.
HyperDrives are, in my opinion, the best bang for your buck for photo storage devices. Sure, you can spend $700 on a great Epson display with a huge LCD, but at that price point, $700 buys you a Netbook and more. If you need to just dump files, then the HyperDrive Space works splendidly and isn't too expensive. If you want to be able to view the photos, then look at the
HYPERDRIVE COLORSPACE HDCS-000 CASING ONLY and buy a 2.5" laptop hard drive (SATA) of any size you want. It literally takes a minute to install.
