Book Description

What’s so “special” about Special Education? SPED lets you find out.

Jack Parker has been content to go through middle school in a SPED small group class for the last two years and stay off the radar of the bullies in his school. While life at Hickory Hills Middle School has been safe for Jack, it has also gotten a bit dull with only four classmates (all boys) to spend the school day with.

All of that changes in Jack’s eighth grade year when girls and trouble show up in his small group class.

Fast paced and funny, SPED tells the story of Jack and his classmates as he handles bullies at school and challenges at home and learns that growing up means taking chances - not only for himself but for those he cares about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! March 6, 2013
By Shelby

SPED is a very well written book that I wouldn't mind to sit down and read numerous times in a row. I finished it within a day and a half. This is one of the books that I think would be great for other eighth graders, like myself, to read so they might realize their words do have effects on others and they should try to the best of their abilities to be nice, because you never know what someone could be dealing with at home. Kind of like when Jack realized everything Leo has to deal with. Overall, it had me dying of laughter in some spots and almost in tears in others. Definitely one of my favorites! I simply cannot wait for the sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars A 10 year old's review... March 6, 2013
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book because it was hilarious. I learned some new things about students who are in special education and how those students feel. I have a better understanding of Dyslexia and how it affects you. Through the eyes of Jack, I learned that being in a small classroom with a small amount of students, that they don't always get treated like everyone else. I thought it was really awesome. Mrs. Marzullo, made a really great book and I can't wait for the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleased With Book March 9, 2013
By Margo
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book for my grandson who is a somewhat "reluctant reader", and I was delighted with the results. He told me that since seventh grade (he is now an eighthgrader) he hadn't been reading much since he always plays his video games instead, but last night he "read his book instead of playing his video games." That statement alone would make me recommend SPED to any and everyone who wants their child to read more. He has already asked me to get him the next book in the series and I will certainly get it for him when it comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relieved! March 19, 2013

In the spirit of full disclosure - the author is my wife and I love her more than words can say...
The day she announced that she was going to write her first book the alarm bells in my head began to sound.
What if I didn't like it? Worse - what if I didn't like it at all. I had visions of TV dinners and lonely weekends for a very long time -
all because our marriage is founded on total honesty.
I had to tell her what I thought and it had to be the truth.
When the fateful day arrived and it landed in my in box - I stared at it for a full minute.
I only had a few minutes to read that day but still decided to dive in...
Much to my delight, I loved the book and continued to read leaving my original project untouched..
So I am happy to report that I have wonderful home cooked meals and lovely weekends with my wife..
I give it a 5 star thumbs rating and hope you will take the time to explore SPED and see for yourself.
Re I love you and I love your first book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Joy to Read! March 7, 2013
By Vicky
Format:Paperback
Wonderful Book! Re captures the unique dynamics of middle school children -- both good and bad -- bringing the characters to life and into your heart. Filled with compassion-learning moments, it is well written, funny and a total joy to read. I will definitely follow Jack and his friends in all their future adventures as they face the obstacles involved in growing up. I highly recommend this book to anyone and think it should be available in every middle school library.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPED--a 'special' book, indeed! April 9, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Ahh, the rigors, the anxieties, the angst of middle school. Certainly an age that, alas, is always more than the rites of passage that's considered "normal" for anyone going through those early teen years. In "SPED," we find that the middle school scene is not the usual--we meet eighth grader Jack Parker, who, himself is not the "average" eighth grader. He is a member of SPED (Small Group Superstars? Small Group Studs?)at Hickory Hills Middle School. It's Special Education. And Jack has been "placed" in this special group most of his eight years--separated from the other students and grouped with like-identified classmates. Jack's concern now, besides meeting girls, is: will I ever get of SPED? Will I be able to go to college?

Re Marzullo's book deals directly with "the system" as she sees it. The author herself is a career educator and certainly knows first hand the "insides and outs" of not only the SPED program but middle school life itself. With excellent insight, clever humor, excellent characterization, and a narrative line that moves ever so rapidly, she presents a picture that is rarely seen--and should be. From Jack's viewpoint, we get a fair view of such a life at school--from facing the bullies to facing "romance" (and learning now to kiss and to dance)--and, from my own experience as an educator, I found this presentation not only to be accurate but told in a manner than is captivating--and true. The sensitivity employed with the central characters cannot help but affect the reader--in positive ways.

That said, Ms Marzullo's writing is vibrant, easily read (a compliment), and to the point. One can only hope that this is the beginning of a solid literary career!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a book for the real underdog April 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Finally, a book as been written from the eyes of a special Ed student that will reach the hearts of special Ed kids everywhere. Not only does it deal with the social issues, it speaks to the outdated beliefs that some educators still hold regarding special education and special Ed students. Thank you for being brave enough to speak up for those who might not have a voice and to let those in special Ed know they aren't alone. Hoorah!

More About the Author

My whole life, I've just felt better when I'm creating something. After trying painting, pottery, and a very short stint in a home ec class (I sewed a shirt that even my dog wouldn't wear), I've realized that writing is my favorite type of creating.

Since I'm a middle school English teacher by day, I have worked morning (early) noon (lunch hours) and night (under the covers) to finish my first YA novel SPED which I am super excited to share with my students and the world.

In addition to writing, I also have a passionate love of football (Geaux Saints and Sic Em Dawgs), potato chips and peanut butter (not together #gross), and my lovely husband and family. I live in suburban Atlanta.
