Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 4-- The subject matter of this collection has surefire child appeal, but not much else to recommend it. The 22 poems concern, among other things, the table manners of the praying mantis (as she eats her mate), the bears that hide under the cellar stairs, and spooks on public transportation ("Wizards ride the subway . . . Mummies take the train"). Attractively designed, the book is illustrated throughout with pen-and-ink drawings that are more humorous than frightening or gruesome. They are nicely done, with a delicate touch. Ulrich is a far better illustrator than poet. There is little of the vivid surprise or internal logic and consistency that effective poetry of this type requires. Instead, there are cheap shocks (". . . finely chopped-up monkey guts"), awkward rhythms, and fragmentary verses that seem to fade away rather than conclude. For scary light verse, try Jack Prelutsky's Nightmares (Greenwillow, 1976); for something more substantial, Halloween Poems (Holiday, 1989), selected by Myra Cohn Livingston and illustrated by Stephen Gammell, is an excellent collection. --Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
