The goal of this book is to provide an unintimidating introduction to data analysis and to SPSS. This edition has been substantially revised to incorporate new data files that focus on topics that interest today's students—in particular, the role of the Internet in society. The book can be used either as a supplementary text or as a primary text in an introductory course in data analysis. It is designed for use with SPSS 11.0, including the Student Version. Data Files

Since the best way to learn about data analysis is to actually do it, this book uses real data to solve a variety of problems. Data from the General Social Survey are used to determine who uses the Internet, and for how long, each week. Data from the Impact of the Internet on Library Use study allows students to examine the role of the Internet on traditional institutions, such as libraries. Data from the Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society allows students to investigate the effect of the Internet on socialization. But of course there's more to life than the Internet. Completion times from the Chicago marathon, opinions of the criminal justice system, and an ABC survey of manners are also analyzed. The variety of data files used should make this book appealing to a broad range of students and teachers. The data files used in the chapters and in the exercises are included with this book. Using This Book

This book is divided into four parts: "Getting Started with SPSS," "Describing Data," "Testing Hypotheses," and "Examining Relationships." Each chapter presents a problem and introduces statistical techniques useful for solving it. Detailed descriptions of the SPSS procedures used are also provided. Each chapter also contains extensive exercises that use the data files described above, as well as others. Instructors can choose exercises that best suit the interests and sophistication of their students. Solutions to even-numbered statistical concepts exercises are in Appendix F.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never has learning statistics and SPSS been so easy!, November 18, 2002

This review is from: SPSS 11.0 Guide to Data Analysis (Paperback)
Prior to grad school, my highest attainment in math was a C in 10th grade Algebra II, yet this book has made introductory statistics and even analysis in SPSS non-threatening and stimulating. Her text is plain English, not dry, with the essential understated humor here and there. As mentioned in other review(s) her use of question/answer format is really useful. She uses 'frequently asked (by beginners)' questions as openners to discussing a topic in more detail, and this approach is very good. Photos of various menu screens in spss are provided and fully explained, as well as samples of output. She takes you up through multiple regression. I wish there was an advanced book on the way!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book knows your needs, September 4, 2002

I needed a book on understanding SPSS. I started without any knowledge of SPSS and I wanted something concise and easy to comprehend. One of the main features of this book is the "?" you will find in between paragraphs. It answers the queries and questions that a beginner would usually ask and the best thing is you don't need to search hard enough! This was the main reason why I got the book. I have looked through a couple of other books on SPSS. Sometimes they are too brief and do not have answers to my questions, some are simply too wordy - wasting too much of my time to search for the answers. If you need something that could guide your understand and apply it straight to your research work, this is one good book for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for converting theory to SPSS mechanics, May 21, 2003

This review is from: SPSS 11.0 Guide to Data Analysis (Paperback)
I've found this book extremely helpful in understanding how to set up the kinds of analysis in SPSS that I want to conduct. I have the theoretical understanding to design the experiment and know what analyses need to be conducted (and could do it by hand if I had to), but this books helps me understand how to efficiently analyze my data within the program itself. Of related books I have looked at, this is the best. The one drawback is that it is designed as a classroom tool with exercises and learning points and not for the professional user. That space could be used for more information and explanation.
