Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Are you confused by SPSS?

Do you understand the concepts of statistics but struggle with the computer analysis?

Are you tired of figuring out in hours what should only take you minutes?

Or are you just looking for a straightforward, comprehensive reference for SPSS?

SPSS for Windows Step by Step: A Simple Guide and Reference, 14.0 Update efficiently shows you how to perform the most common data analysis procedures in SPSS.  The first part of the book explains the basics of creating and formatting a data set and includes a chapter on graphs that accommodates the changes in SPSS 14.0.  Chapters 6-28 explain, step by step, the most common procedures in the Base System Module and the Advanced and Regression Modules.  Each chapter is arranged in three parts:

  1. The “Introduction” explains the procedures that follow at the conceptual level, avoiding excessive detail and excessive emphasis on computation.
  2. “Step by Step” boxes and screenshots break down each procedure with clear references to tasks covered in previous chapters.
  3. “Outcome” sections explain the output of what you have just performed and define critical terms.

All data sets used in this book are available for download on the companion website, saving you the time of entering data.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference, February 8, 2007
By
This review is from: SPSS for Windows Step-by-Step: A Simple Guide and Reference, 14.0 update (7th Edition) (Paperback)
As a first time user of SPSS, I was easily able to set up a data file using this reference book. It is very clearly written, easy to understand, and I think much better than the Pallant "SPSS Survival Manual" which I also purchased.

This review is from: SPSS for Windows Step-by-Step: A Simple Guide and Reference, 14.0 update (7th Edition) (Paperback)
Compared to so many of the other editions, this one (14th) seems to have most of the basics down and helps out quite a few people. For those thrust into the world of SPSS especially, this is a template that seems straight from the choirs of e-heaven. The format makes it REALLY easy to use: I've prepped a lot of programs by using manuals before, but most of them don't include pictures of what the screen should look like. Mallery fixes that omission, connecting all the dots and hitting so many functions of SPSS right on its virtual head.

Included are three sections: (1) A Simple Guide and Reference, (2) Base System Module, and Advanced and Regression Modules.
The first is basically an overview, how to make files and manage data, and how to create grapgs.
The second covers Frequencies, descriptive stats, crosstabulation, bivariate correlation, T Tesing, 1,2,and 3 way ANOVAs, Simple and Multiple Regression, some Nonparametrics, Reliability Analysis, Factor, Cluster, and Discriminant Analysis.
The final part covers Manova and Mancova, Repeated Measures Anova, Logistic Regression, Loglinears, and Residuals.

While this isn't EVERYTHING, it certainly is quite a bit to be walked through hand-in hand and makes things a lot easier. The picture guide is especially good if you are shaky about something, and this book does what a lot of books promise - it helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is where the beef is/, October 27, 2007
This review is from: SPSS for Windows Step-by-Step: A Simple Guide and Reference, 14.0 update (7th Edition) (Paperback)
This book provides the real deal when working with SPSS 13.0. It is a little intimidating to work with, but so far it has answered many questions.
