My computers are in a 180 sq.ft. room on the second floor of my condominium. While my unit has central air, this room is always 4-5 degrees (F.) warmer than the downstairs. In fact, due to the design of the A/C air ducts, this room only gets about half the airflow that goes to another, smaller, upstairs room. In short, it has always been way TOO HOT, especially in the summer, and computers don't like heat.

I bought this unit because of the rave reviews on Amazon, and while I am very pleased with my purchase, there are a few areas where my knowledge was lacking prior to my purchase. Originally, I planned on setting up this unit to use in two different rooms, at two different times of the day, but I soon discovered the casters are too small to safely move the unit with the carpeting I have (though the casters would work well on hard floors). Also, changing the window kit setup and the exhaust vent from one room to another would be way too inconvenient to do on a regular basis, so I quickly abandoned that idea.

Here are a few more points to consider:

1. The unit is much bigger than I thought it was when I looked at the photo on Amazon. Be sure to check out the dimensions before you buy it (see photo).

2. If you have a window that opens by sliding the glass from side to side, and that window is recessed into the wall more than one inch or so, the four inch wide window kit that comes with the machine will not work without some modification. This is because the oval-shaped vent in the kit is about three inches wide, but it quickly flares out to a 6 inch diameter circular vent.

My room is 226 square feet - Studio Apartment
It is 90-94 degrees Farenheit outside in NYC and this baby keeps the room at a comfortable 70 with ease.
It took 5 minutes to unbox, and another 5 minutes to set up last night.
It also draws humidity out of the air, and thus leaves you without that stickiness that stays on those hot summer nights.
Timer features keep it on when you want it, and off when you don't
Has wheels at the bottom making for easier transport.
The dashboard on the top is very intuitive and easy to use. Also comes with remote.
Two settings for COOL: Low, and High; Red Power Button for on or off.
My price range was $250-350 - Very sturdy and a strong air conditioning unit. Does everything I want for the right price.

It's 60lbs - quite Heavy
You have to set up the hot air funnel carefully - it came off twice last night. Id recommend some adhesive or tape to remedy this.

I had a Toyotomi portable AC before, lasted me 10 years before it conked out.. now that old 10K btu is a large, glorified fan.

I have no idea how long this new SPT 8K will last, but we got it last night, assembled it pretty fast, and wham! after a few minutes, it was actually much cooler indoors than out, near hot downtown Los Angeles. Since my Toyotomi was a 10K, I was worried the 8K wouldn't work past the living room, but with the help of a regular fan, some 9 hours later, THE ENTIRE 2 BEDROOM APARTMENT is now below 70 degrees!!! We are ecstatic!

As is typical of portable AC construction, the window hose and connectors are a bit flimsy, but nothing some $15 3M aluminum tape can't fix... that tough tape is GOD for lots of other things around the house that need heat/cold resistant connection one can actually peel off later, so get it, even if you only need a little for this AC. But you could probably reinforce everything with duct tape or strong packing tape.

Recommend getting this little SPT AC if you're like us, and the apartment window casings are very thin. Our new AC made the front door with my horridly rough USPS delivery guy and hit the ground running, no sweat. The apartment is now finally cool after months of torture :) !

This year in Portland, OR we are already having hot days and I live in a small condo. I work from home right by a window and can't move my desk or phone around. I have darkened blinds and a fan that work and I could survive. However, I thought this would be a nice purchase for myself for my birthday. After you open the Amazon box beware....So my daughter and I carried this upstairs and I started to cut the tape off the top but the bottom of the a/c box came off...it was planned that way. Big problem here is that the ADAPTER that you need is in the top of the box. I searched all over where we unpacked and finally called the company and asked them. Wasn't the first time they had been asked for an adaptor. My only other problem with setting up this unit was you MUST pull the hose out to the very very end before you start threading, which is only 2 large threads. It just took some time matching up, the guy at the company told me that yes it was just 2 threads and that I wasn't the first to ask that question either. All in all even with the phone call I had the unit together and plugged in and cooling in about 10 minutes. It does sit out in the room a bit more that I thought it would. Not much louder than a window fan on high but working on the phone all day I will still be able to do hear. Between 4-7 every afternoon in the summer the sun beats thru my office window. I use the black out curtains and the fan and I survived. But I started the AC at 430p and it is now 521p and with the black out curtains and the temp set at 72 the entire upstairs feels great. The dogs won't leave. :) It will be interesting to see what my electric bill does but this will cut down on running 2 window fans and 3 ceilings fans upstairs almost 24/7 during the summer.
