5.0 out of 5 stars Concise, manageable, more than enough information
I found this small reference to be a fantastic choice for me.

I don't understand and totally disagree with the bad reviews. This is a 380+ page REFERENCE that not only covers every single SQL command with examples and illustrations, it covers SQL92, SQL99, plus it also includes the fundamentals of relational databases, some database design theory, and even some...

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book !!
A SQL "instant reference" of syntax, etc., is a great idea. Unfortunately, this book is SO FULL of errors, that as a SQL DBA, I got tired of red-lining errors in the book and correcting them!! It sits gathering dust on my bookshelf. Professionals should stick to Joe Celko.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise, manageable, more than enough information, April 13, 2002
This review is from: SQL Instant Reference (Paperback)
I found this small reference to be a fantastic choice for me.

I don't understand and totally disagree with the bad reviews. This is a 380+ page REFERENCE that not only covers every single SQL command with examples and illustrations, it covers SQL92, SQL99, plus it also includes the fundamentals of relational databases, some database design theory, and even some introductory SQL in case you are not familiar with it. If this is not enough, you also get a very nice glossary. The book is not platform specific, which is another nice plus.

If you are looking for detail, get the SQL Programming from Wrox, or the SQL Unleashed book. If you want to quickly put out some fires, and want a manageable reference handy, then do not hesitate to buy this one.

5 stars and totally recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars SQL instant reference is just that, July 21, 2002
By
A good, concise, thorough, compact review of SQL92 in 350 pages, with user-friendly and thoughtful organisation and layout, and some examples.

Like other reviewers I am puzzled by complaints that it is not a primer for SQL beginners and does not cover vendor extensions to the SQL language. If you need a primer, by all means buy a primer. If you need a book on a vendor's product, buy one of those. There are dozens!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference!, July 13, 1999
By A Customer
This is the most used of my SQL book collection - pure syntax, and some paltry notes. For the person who is really serious and doesn't want to read a tome that talks down to you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, small sized reference., June 17, 1998
By A Customer
This book covers the sql standard only. It does not cover anything which is db specific. I feel it is a good bood if you want quick access to statement syntax without having to leaf through a 3000 page book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for me but my husband raves about it, March 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SQL Instant Reference (Paperback)
I am so not into SQL but any reference book that my husband (Mr. Quick to throw away everything) keeps by his bedside table is worth its weight in gold. As my husband works on projects, he turns to this book time and time again. Unlike most things in our house, this one has not collected much dust at all.

2.0 out of 5 stars I felt for a reference manual it was very vague, October 8, 1999
By A Customer
I felt the book was very vague. I understand it is a reference manual, but the syntax descriptions are very cryptic and hard to follow. I would not recommend this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Totally Useless, November 2, 2005

As a SQL reference, this book is useless. I was expecting (at least) a definition if SQL commands: none. Get your SQL reference from the internet. It's free and at your fingertips...

1.0 out of 5 stars A terrible SQL reference, January 17, 2001
This review is from: SQL Instant Reference (Paperback)
I was very disappointed with this book. It does not really serve as a reference, but a small tutorial on SQL instead, with the text crowded into a small booklet. There are few tables and even fewew examples. Also, for MySQL users: Many of the capabilities are left out. I go to a reference to look up things, not to read through several pages only to find that what I'm looking for is not there.
