Book Description

September 26, 2011
The SQL developer needs to be able to create processes for the working database by using one of the many programming objects (like functions, stored procedures, constrains, or triggers). By creating objects that talk with SQL you simply the way other programs (like applications or web pages) can interconnect. These eternal programs only need to call on the names of your programming objects by name rather than needing to submit large pieces of advance code. With SQL Programming Development (Volume 4 of 5) in the SQL Server Joes 2 Pros development series, you learn how programming objects work in SQL Server.

A Review of the Reviewers January 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
First, I do not own this book and I have not read it, but I would encourage you to read on.

I was looking at the Microsoft Press book for the 70-433 test and the reviews are just average so I decided to dig deeper and I came across the Joes 2 Pros series of books. The reviews looked great. This particular book, at the time I'm writing this review (1/5/2012), has 4 reviews and they are all 5 star.

However, I started to read the reviews and they all, to me, seemed to be too perfect so I dug a bit deeper. I decided to look at the other reviews that these reviewers have written.

Mr. Doshi has written 3 reviews. They are all 5 star and they are all for CreateSpace books, the publisher of this book.

Bill P has written the one review for this book.

SQLWriter has written 2 reviews. Both 5 stars and both for books from this publisher.

Groovechampion has written many more reviews, but only 5 of them are for books. All the book reviews are 5 star, and all are for books, once again, for this publisher. Furthermore, when someone made a comment under one of his reviews that was slightly negative about the publisher taking a long time to publish, Goovechampion replied. In his reply, he referenced the fact that the author was currently in India researching his next project. Rather strange that an impartial reader would know the location of an author working on a new book.

These books may indeed be excellent. But something, to me, smells fishy about the reviews.

SQL Programming Joes 2 Pros: Programming and Development for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 is the fourth volume in the very informative Joes 2 Pros series. These education books are more than just an overview of SQL Server, they are a textbook for learning and designed to take beginners and turn them into professionals.

To start out with, let's review the layout of this book. It is not simply a manual chock full of small text and lots of detail. In fact, this book will remind you more of a college text book - complete with examples, quizzes and a glossary. Readers have multiple chances to check in with their learning and make sure they are absorbing as much information as possible.

Each chapter has multiple "Points to Ponder" section at the end of every subject. These "Points to Ponder" are more than just a summary of what you've already read - so don't skip ahead to these bullet points and think you're getting the full view. These points do go over the highlights, but also add thought problems to the mix, so that your brain can interpret the problems from many different angles.

If you are simply flipping through this book, the first thing you will notice is how many pictures and detailed illustrations there are. As mentioned before - this is not a manual with tiny print. The authors are determined to make sure their readers learn and understand the concepts, and provide screen shots directly from SQL Server so that readers know exactly what to look for. The illustrations point out the important details, and there are also pictures of what will happen if things go wrong - which any student will recognize as a huge help!

If you think a book with so many pictures isn't going to be serious, then think again. The Joes 2 Pros series takes learning seriously, and includes many examples and demonstrations for readers to follow along with on their own computers. You can also download companion files to serve as extra practice. Combine these exercises with the quizzes at the end of every chapter, and readers will soon be confident in their programming and development skills.

In fact, the goal of the authors is to take beginners and get them to a level where they can become Microsoft Certified Technical Specialists. If you follow the Joes 2 Pros series from beginning to tend (this is the fourth volume in a five book series), you can be confident that this goal will be achieved. If you are an intermediate or advanced user, though, this book will not bore you. It is a great way to learn about new features or fill any gaps in your knowledge.

One chapter especially worth pointing out is Chapter 13: Performance Tips, written by Pinal Dave - Technology Evangelist and Microsoft MVP. This chapter specifically focuses on how to optimize and streamline SQL Server performance. Learning these steps is almost as critical as learning the basics, and in this chapter, Pinal Dave explains why these "little things that count."

Overall, this book is a must-have for anyone who works with SQL Server. It is a great learning tool, and believe it or not, a great read! Each chapter introduces the topic with a short story that serves as an example for the material about to be covered, which makes this book both entertaining and informative. Five stars!

I highly recommend this book for both beginning and advanced SQL Server programmers and DBAs. It is concise, easy to read and clear. For those just starting out in their SQL Server career, I can't recommend this book enough. For those more advanced in their careers, this books and its companions in the series are great refresher books.

This book is easy to read without feeling like you are about to fall asleep. There are lots of examples throughout the book, as well as many figures (pictures of both queries and their results). Exercises have a progression through the chapter and build upon the prior exercise or example.

This book covers a lot of topics, including constraints, triggers, views, stored procedures, user-defined functions, error messages and error handling, and other topics. There is also a chapter on Performance Tips that covers "little things" that help contribute to better performance. The little things add up!

Get this book and read it!
