About the Author

Ian Stirk is a freelance consultant based in London. He's a world-class expert in SQL Server performance and a fierce advocate for DMVs.

More About the Author

My current skill base is largely centred on SQL Server, with a speciality in performance. Additionally, I keep up to date with what's happening in the C#/.NET world. I'm also interested in some of the newer technologies, particularly Mobile, Big Data, Social Media, and future trends. I've worked in IT since 1987, so covered a lot of ground: Mainframes, Minis, PCs, Internet, and coded in more than 12 different languages.

In the course of my work I often create new software utilities, and when possible I author articles on these utilities to share with others. Additionally, I'm a technical reviewer of books and magazines. I've also written a well-received SQL Server performance book SQL Server DMVs in Action: www.amazon.com/SQL-Server-DMVs-Action-Management/dp/1935182730. I feel it is important to give something back to the industry that provides me with a living.

On a final note, I'm a freelance consultant, and I'm available to help improve the performance of your SQL Servers/C#. You can contact me for availability and cost at ian_stirk@yahoo.com.

This book is fantastic. It is not my 1st DMV book, I actually own Performance Tuning with SQL Server Dynamic Management Views (High Performance Sql Server), but I consider this one a better book, without saying the other one is bad either. The reason for that is that this book has a better layout and it is easier to follow. The code snippets are more practical too, in my opinion. This book helped me to troubleshoot (and improve) several slow queries the same day I bought it.

What I prefer or like of this book is the layout and logic. It would make more sense if you read from start to end, but you can even jump into an specific chapter and start taking benefit from it. You will need a basic understanding of T-SQL, but the explanations are clear and easy to follow. It helps that they also show the screen-shoots of the query results and they even provide further explanation of the code snippet itself, like what line is doing what, the reason for using CROSS APPLY, etc.

DMVs are not new, they were 1st introduced on SQL2005 couple of years ago, but combine them via JOINS can be a very complex task. I've been creating my own code snippets for quite a while but these two books actually go beyond from giving you a simple code and they teach you something.

By the way, there is no Kindle version of this book at the time of my review, but when you buy the regular paper book, you later can download the ebook version on three different formats, and they are free: PDF, ePub and Mobi, that's a nice deal! I have my own hard copy at home, and downloaded the PDF version on my work's PC. Be aware that some of the code snippets are difficult to read on a Kindle 3 though, so better if you use an iPad of Kindle DXG for that.
