Terrible writing by non-DBAs,
By A Customer
This review is from: SQL Server System Administration (The Landmark Series) (Paperback)
This book reads like it's written by a couple of high schoolers who didn't have their grammar teacher look over their work before it got into print. It reads a lot like the incomprehensible nonsense on Hotek's Web site. It also reads like the people who wrote it aren't actually SQL Server admins. It reads like they're consultants. I don't think these guys would know the daily life of a DBA if it jumped up and bit them on the a$$. Hotek in particular is a singularly bad writer. One sentence fragment after another litters his work. After seeing this, I will never trust another thing Hotek says.

Buyer Beware: Book doesn't cover SQL Server 2000,
By A Customer
This review is from: SQL Server System Administration (The Landmark Series) (Paperback)
A book like this ought to tell you what version of SQL Server it covers, but it doesn't. Instead, we get one anachronism after another from the 7.0 days. The book should focus on the current version of the product. From the title, you'd never know that the book was so out of date. It's one of those books with a very early "Use By" date. Unfortunately, this one has already expired.

This book is a joke. It is not very helpfull even to the advanced users, much less to people who are new to SQL Server. In short you would be much better of reading books on line. Shame on authors and editors.

Out of date,
By Ron Preston (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews

After some guy on a Web site recommended this book, I went and bought it. Frankly, I'm disappointed. Were there pages missing or did old Mike forget about SQL Agent? With SQL Server 2000 on the street, much of what you see here is old hat. Current books cover SQL 2000. This one doesn't. For a guy that apparently spends more time on the newsgroups than he does actually using the product, the self-important style is inappropriate. Go and earn your stripes, Mike.

I don't know why it is that reviewers tend to "jump on bandwagons" and follow what the previous reviewers say, as if by fear to be "unpopular". This book is great, it covers most of what you need to know about SQL Server 7, if what you want is to get started, and without having to read 1000+ pages full of reference and generic statements. This book is very well written, with a style that is unlike your "typical" technical book, as it is fresher and easy to follow. Perhaps its only downfall was that it lacked detail on certain key areas of interest, and at the same time it didn't cover some key commands and tools, but too few to find this book less than valuable. It is not the only book you want to own and because of that it is not a 5 star book as a super value. It is a 4 start because amongst other things, if you ever come across a tool you need a reference to, this book is not the book you want to have handy, because it is not a full reference. You will enjoy the read if you have no previous or very little SQL Server experience, otherwise it could go either way.

Good Solid Book,

I really don't know what the previous reviewers are talking about. As a former Oracle DBA (one who is interested in the internals) this book gives the reader a great deal of information regarding the architecture of SQL Server 7.0. It is not a 'click here to do this' type of book. You do have to have a reasonable understanding of what a computer is to comprehend most of it. It is always on my desk and I give it a buy recommendation.

Great Book,

This book is great for configuring your SQL Server out of the box or cleaning up an installation setup by someone who is less than knowledgable. It walks you around the common pitfalls and security gotchas. It does all of this with minimal fluff. Great for the people thrown to the DBA wolves without training.

Accomplished what it set out to.,

This book was not written as an in depth manual for SQL Server 7.0. It was written to cover certain topics that are usually not covered very well in other books. I have been using SQL 6.5 for some time and am in the process of upgrading to 7.0 (and already have on some servers). I found this book very enlightening, well written, and concise. Not a lot of hooplah. The only drawback was I found myself wishing that this author would write an in depth book about SQL 7.0.

Well put together reference for SQL 7.0,

Nicely organized without the hoo-hah of "how to" with gobs of screen shots. My reference point was a little SQL Server and a lot of data base experience. I understood what they were saying. The authors speak technical English. They make the appropriate assumptions about what you should know about SQL Server before you open the book. This is not a reference book (others are probably better) nor a book for beginners, although newbies might use this as a starting point. This book does not go into SQL syntax (others have done this better)... Not enough clarity was given on "new features" of SQL server. No reference was made to specific technet articles, but URL's were prominent. This was my first read on a SQL server book; so my rating of 4 stars might up or down. What I found most interesting was the last ten pages of the book, which were summaries of the "Landmark Series". The series looks good, maybe even very good. That's all. |
