5.0 out of 5 stars Switching gears, April 29, 2009

I could not find a road cassette to meet my needs so I bought this MTB cassette for it's 11-28 gearing. My bike came with a 12-26 which is nice but I live in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains so it is half uphill no matter what unless you are beside a river or stream. The SRAM is lighter than my stock piece and is plated to prolong life. Awesome buy at a great price. (under 20)

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great with Shimano systems, December 31, 2010

This cassette is inexpensive, yet works wonderfully over lots of miles. I have 4,000 miles on one cassette, and bought another for my other road bike, which I have 1000 miles on. Shifts very smoothly, no complaints at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, smooth shifts. Weak rivets., July 28, 2011

This review is from: SRAM PG850 8 Speed Cassette (Sports)
I purchased this cassette to replace a worn on on a used bike (2007 Specialized Rockhopper) I bought. No matter how much I adjusted the rear derailleur, I just couldn't get the chain to change gears quickly and smoothly. I suspected that the old cassette's teeth were worn, and it seems as if I was right...This cassette did the trick. Perfect, fast, smooth shifting. It's certainly not a light-weight, but for under $20, it definitely can't be beat.

If you've never changed a cassette before, and you're attempting this yourself, you'll have to have 2 tools in order to remove your old one - a Chain Whip, and a Cassette Lockring tool. Without these, it'll be very difficult (nearly impossible) to remove your old cassette. If you don't have a chain whip, do like I did, and make one using an old bike chain, and a piece of thin metal to be used as a handle.

Update (09/13/2011):
I removed the cassette because my rear hub was failing. Upon removal, I found the rivets holding the cogs together had failed. This isn't a big problem for me, it just slows down the process of swapping cassettes, or replacing them after cleaning. On a positive note, it makes it all that much easier to thoroughly clean each cog & spacer, making the cassette look like brand new every time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, September 21, 2009

Works great, the only thing I recommend is to make sure you have the correct tool to remove the nut that locks this on, I didn't and had to wait another week, after taking apart my bike, to order the tool from Amazon.

I don't even think of trying out some other brand. Excellent value too. Never a broken cog or tooth and I get about 7k dusty miles out of it. Tried a few "non brand name" cassettes and they cracked right away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good!, September 6, 2010
Simano has only 1 gear ratio 8speed casset.
Comapred with Shimano, SRAM has 5 gear ratio.
I have changed the casset from 12-26 to 11-28T for my weak legs.
There is no need to change the CHAIN.
Thank you SRAM!

5.0 out of 5 stars Custom cassette, October 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have a Trek 7500 with an 8-speed rear cassette. The original cassette was built with 2-tooth jumps from cog to cog in the mid-range. I wanted to create a custom cassette with single-tooth jumps from cog to cog. I purchased both the 11-30 and 11-28 gearing options of the PG850 and combined them into a custom cassette with the desired single-tooth jumps. Works perfectly. The result is finer tuning of gearing. The loss of the largest cogs was a no-brainer since I never shifted into those cogs anyway. Combined the new custom cassette with a SRAM 870 chain. Great performance and good value.
