I am using this NAS with 6 Western Digital 1TB 2.5 inch drives and couldn't be happier. I originally tried a Synology 2.5 NAS 4-bay (DS411 Slim) even and had major heat issues (even with the latest firmware). The DS411 was also god awfully slow and was left with very little free memory even just running basic network services. I decided to return it and splurge on the QNAP. Drive temps on the QNAP are between 80-86F under load. CPU temps hang around 100F under load. Transfer rates over GigE not using jumbo frames are a steady 65Mb/s. Using green drives that run 5200RPM I couldn't be happier and expect a little bump once a new switch with jumbo frame support arrives later this week. As for noise, this is a quiet unit. I barely hear the fan even when coping large amounts of data. The unit also recognized my APC UPS and external 4TB unit via ESATA for backups right away with no tweaking. As of right now I am extremely happy with my purchase and will provide an update down the road as to long-term reliability.
