Format: Paperback
The back cover of this book claims the book is the first to present the "complete story" of the Waffen-SS armored formations in World War II. That may be a bit of an overstatement, but the book is a very good general introduction to armored vehicles of the Waffen-SS and the major campaigns of the primary Waffen-SS divisions in World War II.

The book is divided chronologically into four sections (or chapters, if you will). Each section begins with a 3-4 page review of the SS armor formations and their most well known battles over a particular period. About a dozen pages of photographs of SS vehicles with informative captions for each picture follow the text for each section. (Photos and captions are included in the textual portions as well.) The pictures are well-chosen and several have appeared in later pictorials of the Waffen-SS. About a dozen maps of different campaigns are also included. They are well done but are often quite small.

Most notably, there are 8 pages of extremly well-done and detailed full-color illustrations of over 60 various Waffen-SS combat vehicles and personnel. (E.g., in one instance you can even tell the type of American cigarette package an SS-Panzergrenadier is holding [Lucky Strike].) The illustrations all appear to be drawn from actual combat photos of the subjects, increasing their realism.

As with many books of this nature, there is no index and, in this instance, not even a table of contents. Still, the book is a very good general introduction to the major Waffen-SS divisions and their vehicles.

The writting style of this book is not in depth and dry. But that is not what is promised. The purpose of the book is to show previously unpublished SS photos. They are placed in chronological order showing SS motorized units. Though all the pictures are not clear; they are authentic and very interesting. And contains great illustrations of vehicles and uniforms. Purchase the book for the pictures.

Any review of this book would have to start out by pointing out that this book is not intended primarily for the student of history but for diorama, model and figurine builders as well as illustrated. As the author states on the first page of the book " It is my .... Intention to explore by use of ... photographs the evolution and use of SS armour, its camouflage and markings" and that "it is not my intention to write a definitive history of the SS, as many other books explore that topic in much greater depth". The photographs that the author refers to was a newly discovered collection (not that new today as the book was published in 1978) of SS armour and vehicles in the field during the second world war.

With respect to their intent the photographs do a very good job. They show a fairly wide selection of vehicles, including soft skin vehicles such as trucks, kubelwagens, schwimwagens, etc. and personnel, in a large variety of fronts, through many time frames during the war and in all seasons. Many of these photographs are quite detailed. They show many details that serious (with emphasis on serious) modelers, illustrators, figurine and diorama builders would be very interested in. For example, how the water based camo paint used on vehicles and guns were off due to use and wear and tear. On armored personnel carriers, for example, it wore away around areas that troops dismounted from. On guns from areas that heated quite a bit (upper ends of barrels). The book also shows quite a bit of detail regarding division symbols, for example.

Where the book is weak, unfortunately, is the fact that all the photographs are black and white (even though the author discusses relevant colors in these B&W photos).

Though it contains very little text information or anything new on the subject, this thin book is full of many different pictures documenting the life of the SS Panzers Division. Good for those looking for pictures from the war and little else.
