4.0 out of 5 stars No SSX3, but still great, October 16, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SSX on Tour (Video Game)
I've been an avid fan of the SSX series for quite a while, owning all but the first installment of the series. So naturally when I learned that SSX On Tour was being released I rushed to a store and picked up a copy.

The first thing I noticed (other than the catchy, sketch style menus) was that I wouldn't be using my favorite character, Allegra, this time around. Instead you get to create your own character, which was good and bad. The cool side is that you get to customize him or her to your heart's desire, the downside is that they are strangely silent. Your character will not taunt others or cheer when victorious, something you may take for granted in previous SSX games.

Upon starting the "On Tour", the main mode of gameplay, I discovered the single greatest dissappointment that this game has: there is no freeriding around the mountain. One of my absolute favorite things about SSX3 was the ability to just cruise around the mountain, which gave the game a much more realistic feeling. If you wanted to participate in an event you could either take the lift or just take your time and board down to it. This fantastic feature is sadly absent from On Tour.

My final gripe is the voices of the characters that you do encounter. Kaori's funny Japanese jibberish (at least for we non-Japanese speaking people) from previous games has been replaced by a harsh English speaking voice that can easily be summed up as "unpleasant." What they do say is generally less than interesting. Their total list of phrases seems to be quite limited as well, only saying a few varies slogans each.

But there are alot of pluses as well. The addition of skiing is very entertaining, opening up an entire different style of gameplay. The ability to do quite a few "Uber Tricks" (now referred to simply as "Monster Tricks") based on sequential movements of the "C" directional stick is a nice feature as well. This allows you to have several more super tricks at your disposal without having to change them back and forth in the lodge, as in SSX3. Another great feature for the game is the addition of casual skiiers. When you race on a course there will be random skiiers, boarders, and even kids on tubes sliding their way down the mountain. How do you deal with this? Swerve, knock them down, whatever is necessary. I thought this was a great touch as, honestly, who goes down an entire mountain by themselves with no other contact?

Overall the game will offer both diehard SSX fans and casual gamers alike a great overall experience. Once again EA has hit the mark. Despite a few things I find lacking, you should not hesitate to pick up a copy of this game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Overall, November 1, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SSX on Tour (Video Game)
Now before I start, I must state that I haven't played any previous SSX games so I can't compare this one to the others.

The best thing I think about SSX: On Tour is the soundtrack, I love Red Flag, God Killed the Queen, Run for the Hills, and one other that I can't remember right now. All around its very good there.

The controls are easy to use but may be a bit confusing at first, but I'm a bit slow at those things, you may have a different experience.

The character creation is very nice, with the brand name equipment to customize your character with. But the absence of personality from your person is a bad aspect there.

I also disagree with the addition of Mario and them in this version of the game. If I wanted to be Mario I would go buy a Mario game.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Game of Ups and Downs, December 20, 2005
By
Patrick Myers "Jazzy" (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) - See all my reviews
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SSX on Tour (Video Game)
Being the avid SSX fan that I am, I immediately picked this game up as soon as it was available in stores. As I started playing it, I realized that there were quite a few things different from this game and (from my belief) the best game of the series, SSX 3. Some of these changes were good; creating your own character certainly keeps your interest in the game, and the Ski Patrol are quite the evil ones- and escaping them is just so much more fun than being knocked into the snow headfirst. I also think that the option of playing with skis was a nice touch to the game as well, and improved playability. However, without being able to play my favorite character- (Kaori) in Tour mode, it dropped my views on the game considerably.

My complaints on Kaori alone: She's Japanese- why is she American all of a sudden? No profiles? I agree, the cameos were an excellent addition to the game, but I do believe that what I loved before was that each character had a backstory and a journey. Now they're just generic. She is also speaking fluent English without any trouble at all. It is possible she could have learned it over the time frame, but in video games, is that such a good thing? I miss the Kaori that was created in the other three games. The newest concept is cool, but the playability is lowered with knowing that in most races, the characters you have grown to love hae been eliminated.

The game, however, is quite good graphics wise; the only complaint there is that the characters, once again, look stereotypical- not the characters I know and love. Scenery and options and courses are all improved greatly, which does raise my opinion on the game, which, overall, is deserving of a four out of five.
