5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read

versus
2.0 out of 5 stars Soul crushing and full of despair.
I'll admit up front that I'm the "good guys always win" and "they lived happily ever after" type of person.
It's what I prefer in my escapist readings when I want to recharge my batteries, so to speak.
While tragedy does add spice to a story, as long as "all's well that ends well", then the spice simply makes the victory that much sweeter
and worthwhile...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read, January 3, 1999

I am not a usual fantasy or sci-fi reader, but a friend convinced me to read The Star of the Guardians series. In fact, the only fantasy I had read before this were The Lord of the Rings. I became addicted to The Star of the Guardians as soon as I picked them up! King's Sacrifice stuck out in my mind as the best one in the series though (I cried more than I did in Gone With the Wind and The Man in the Iron Mask(the book) combined). The best part about this book was the inexorable destinies of Lady Maigrey and Lord Sagan, and their romantic interactions with one another. Now don't get me wrong! It isn't all mush, it is very quick-paced! The mush just got to me the most. The only thing about this book is that the writing is good, but not excellent like Ray Bradbury or Margaret Atwood...in other words, it's not what you might call a contemporary classic. From a well read person, I think you would like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars King' Sacrafice will move you!, April 24, 2000
King's Sacrafice takes us back to the galaxy with Dion, Sagan and Maigrey. This novel picks up right where the prequel lets off......it is high paced, and leaves you on the edge of your seat. Scenes with Abdiel are very intense, and entertaining. I loved this novel due to the influx of new intriguing characters. See who will finally control the galaxy! Will it be Dion? Or Sagan? Or Maigrey? Or a combination of all three?

5.0 out of 5 stars It will move even the most iron-hearted reader!!!!, November 20, 1998
By A Customer
This book, which was intended to be the conclusion of the Star of the Guardians series, is just about as different from the usual mass-marketable science fiction as you can get. Not only will you be alternatively mesmerized, horrified and deliriously excited by the graphic action, but your heart will truly go out to the main characters. You will marvel at their choices, rejoice at the outcomes or mourne their fates... do not think you will escape the conclusion dry-eyed.

And at the end, like the legions of Margaret Weis' fans, you will also want to raise a bloodsword to the courage of Lady Maigrey, Lord Sagan and Dion Starfire!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mieux que Star War, January 23, 2000

2.0 out of 5 stars Soul crushing and full of despair., February 28, 2011
I'll admit up front that I'm the "good guys always win" and "they lived happily ever after" type of person.
It's what I prefer in my escapist readings when I want to recharge my batteries, so to speak.
While tragedy does add spice to a story, as long as "all's well that ends well", then the spice simply makes the victory that much sweeter
and worthwhile. For those who are sick of the above types of stories and want to see chaos and "realism" reign, this is the right series for you.

It's been years since I've read "Star of the Guardians" trilogy (the original 3 books) and I still have a bad taste in my literary mouth. I rather wish I'd never picked them up.

The secondary love interest that runs throughout the series ends with one lover killing the other to "save" her.
After finally being "cured" of being a gullible idiot, the protagonist is forced to give up his true love and pledge to marry the daughter of a "witch" in order to gain access to her armada. This is to rescue the secondary characters, only they do not actually need/use the armada in the end, thus it's all for naught.

Instead of the exultation at the end when the protagonist wins and all is right with the world, I'm left wondering if any of it was worth the bother.
The answer I generally come up with for this particular fictional world is "no, let the universe burn since life sucks".

This is the first series where I felt I wanted a refund of the time I spent reading it and making myself care about the characters.

Is the writing good? Yes.
Are the characters believable and lovable? Yes.

That's the worst part of it all.
It's the ending that sets my teeth on edge.
In this case, "good wins, but is spiritually maimed and forced to endure because that's what life is all about".

If you think you'd prefer the ending of Star Wars to be "Han kills Leia and then is apparently lost in an explosion, while Luke marries Jabba the Hutt's sister for no apparent reason other than Jabba's big dune speeder yacht *might* have been needed for a weekend party, but turns out it didn't after all", then this is the book series for you. In the end, the universe trades one form of bad for another.
It reminds me of a congressional election.

If you think yourself suffering from boughts of chronic manic feelings (the opposite of depression), read this series and it will cure you... permanently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Star of the Guardians Keeps Getting Better!, April 27, 2008

This review is from: King's Sacrifice (Paperback)
Sorry, I can't tell you why, but I bawled like a baby when I read this book. That never happened to me before. Oh, yes, I cry all the time in movie theaters, it embarrasses the heck out of my wife. But a book? C'mon.

King's Sacrifice brings the Star of the Guardians series to a cataclysmic conclusion. You have a good idea what's going to happen, you think, and then all of a sudden you get hit broadside. You better be sitting down when this one wraps up. Sagan, Maigrey, Dion, Tusk, all the wonderful friends you've enjoyed for during the story, they end up in the most surprising circumstances. And yes, it will make you sob your heart out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cliff-hangar . . ., December 16, 1997
By A Customer
Margaret Weis is a terrific author. However, I was unusually disappointed by this book. It left too many loose-ends untied. I get the feeling that we (the readers) were rushed through the book. There was not that much detail and description. I hope that Ghost Legion will answer all my questions. Otherwise, its a great book.
