I have had Three of these ornaments. The first was brand new from store the sound faild by 3rd year. Bought second off ebay sound was DOA and returned. Third from ebay worked fine then also failed. It is obvious that the sound on this orniment is faulty as I have read a lot of them on ebay have failed sound also. It is not worth the price this item demands as a faulty factory item that should have been recalled.

I'm giving this a 1-star review so maybe people will read this (I actually love this ornament): If your ornament has broken (if you have one) or you've purchased one and the audio doesn't really work, but it still lights, there is a 1000 uF cap inside that was probably from a bad batch of Chinese caps. Replacing this cap restores the ornament to working condition. The replacement is fairly simple for anyone with some soldering skills. Touching up the solder joints doesn't hurt either. Electrolytic caps do sometimes go bad (there were several made in China that have been the worst offenders as of late), and are probably the cause of most electronic waste, as many devices, such as this, would likely still work otherwise. The website badcaps.net can get you replacement caps. There is another 1uF cap on this device, but it had not appeared to go bad. A bad cap will typically bulge at the top of the can (there are vent marks to allow outgassing usually), but can bulge at the bottom of the can as well. Anyway, I've seen a lot of these on ebay, so I figure people might end up with bad ornaments from Amazon as well.

Updated this: The capacitor is from a reputable manufacturer, so either the capacitor wasn't handled well during install (usually not a problem as caps are fairly tough), or the circuit design is poor.

This is absolutely my favorite Star Trek ornament of all time; which just makes it that much more depressing when it breaks.

I think the problem is is uses power, not from low voltage batteries, but from 120 volt A/C. This was the last year Hallmark (maybe the second to last year) did that. The problem is that depending on how long your light string is the actual power the ornament receives is variable. I believe this is the problem with the high failure rate.

If you purchase this ornament, I'd recommend, not leaving it plugged in--just plug it in when you want to demonstrate it. It doesn't light-up or anything the rest of the time anyway.

Also, I'm guessing too much power might be causing these to burn-out, so I'd say away from short 50 or 75 light strings. Find a nice 200-300 light string to put it on.

Last, theses older types of Hallmark ornaments do not work with the newer LED type of string. Only the order incandescent ones. I have so many of the older type, I have to keep a separate tree for them. Another option--if you use LED lights--is to add just one of the older incandescent strings to your tree, just to power these older ornaments.

Bottom line: This is a wonderful addition to any Star Trek or Hallmark collection, but just don't plan on using it on a regular basis.

We also bought the ornament in 2004 as part of our on-going collection. Ours actually failed the first year. The sound was garbled when we got it, then failed completely. I bought one on another ornament website for the same price and the sound does not work on it either, even though I specifically asked about that defect. I, too, love the ornament and would love to have a working version to complete our collection, but it is not worth the cost to continue buying defective ornaments. Such a shame!

Unfortunately it did not work when plugged into the tree light set. I bought it in September and because it is a Christmas ornament , I didn't try it until Christmas when I put it on my tree.......so no refund , no return.

This is apparently the first diarama style that was made for the series. The background with the lighting effect is very cool, but I had gotten 2 and neither of them worked for the voice clips--would love to hear what it is supposed to do when you push the column. The first one was $60.00--very pricey but if it worked I would have kept it. They sell ones on-line in which they acknowledge there is no audio for as much as $50 which is too much I think. I returned the one I paid $60 for that did not work and found another on-line for $16.00. Although they did not advertise that the audio did not work, it was worth keeping for $16--not $60.
