Editorial Reviews

BUYSOUNDTRAX Records presents the original soundtrack to STARCHASER: THE LEGEND OF ORIN, featuring music composed by Andrew Belling for the 1985 3D animated science fiction film directed by Steven Hahn, written by Jeffrey Scott, featuring the voices of Joe Colligan, Carmen Argenziano, Noelle North, Anthony De Longis, Tyke Caravelli and Les Tremayne.

STARCHASER tells the story of Orin (Colligan), part of a tribe of humans who are forced to excavate the rare crystals of Mineworld by the evil Zygon (De Longis) and his technologically superior army. Similar to Fritz Lang s METROPOLIS, Orin and his people are kept in line with the belief that the world above them has been destroyed and if they continue to work hard and reach their crystal quota, their God will reward them. One day while he is digging, Orin finds a mysterious sword-hilt with a magical energy blade that only responds to his command. Holding the sword-hilt for the first time releases a hologram of a bearded man who encourages him to defy his captors and seek the freedom of the world above. Spurred on by the death of his loved ones, Orin makes his escape, digging his way up to the planet s surface to discover a sky full of stars and fresh air to breathe. Exploring the surface, Orin meets Dagg (Argenziano), a gruff smuggler known for his predilection for fembots and merciless treatment of mandroids. Orin joins Dagg on board his spaceship, the Starchaser, computer controlled by Arthur (Tremayne), who sounds more like an English butler than a pilot. Orin journeys from one end of the galaxy and back, trying to discover the origins of his mysterious weapon and how he can destroy Zygon and free the people of Mineworld.

Starchaser was a beloved film of mine back in the day. I missed it during its very brief run in the theaters (thus missing the 3D action), but did catch it on VHS and loved it. I got the DVD as soon as it was released and loved it too. Now they have released a soundtrack CD of the movie, which is surprising considering the limited audience this film ended up having. What you have here is an extensive track list of the music directly from the movie. There were no songs from popular artists on this film so all you get here is the incidental music used to heighten the emotion of a scene.

As such this soundtrack is really only for people who enjoy listening to incidental music. There isn't much in the way of melodies and catchy orchestral themes on this soundtrack. The main theme can be found peppered through a few tracks like the Main Theme, Welcome Aboard, and the End Credits. It's a catchy theme, however it's a soundtrack tune which doesn't seem fit for radio airlplay and the like. If I had to pick favorites (music that is more like a proper song) then I would single out the opening and end themes as well as Sky Chase (one of the few all synth tracks... I have a soft spot for that kind of sound). Again this is an album for fans of strictly soundtrack music.

The music was done by the London Studio Symphony Orchestra with a small spattering of late 70's-early 80's style synthesizers on a few songs. This orchestra is a smaller one compared to other ones you have heard from soundtracks like Star Wars or 2001. It's not a tiny orchestra either, however those of you familiar with the music will notice it doesn't quite the same grand scale sound you would expect from a bigger budget production.

I love the movie that this music accompanies. Neither film nor score have deep earth shattering themes in them, but the two combine to bring a fun sci-fi popcorn fun film. There actually isn't much music for the film, and if you've seen the film, then you might find that the score only lasts a little a half hour.

A mixture of electronic and traditional orchestrations bring us the heroics of Dag and Orin as they race across space to save the system from Zygon, a machine-man who is bent on bringing mechanical supremacy to the fore via military conquest of "meat bodies". The music uses a mixture of traditional sci-fi themes and high adventure arraingments in the tradition of John Williams. In fact the composure, Andrew Belling, states that he was prodded to do a John Williams-esque / Star Warsish score, but kept it simple. The result; some respectable music that fans of the film will love.

My only regret is that I purchased an overpriced CD from a third party not affiliated with Amazon, but who has been able to get extremely hard to find film scores for me in the past. I paid over $20 as a base price, and then more for standard shipping. Do yourself a favor and some money by buying here at Amazon.
