Book Description

WASHINGTON, September 9, 1998

Dear Mr. Speaker and Representative Gephardt:

Today this office has delivered to the sergeant-at-arms, the Honorable Wilson Livingood, 36 sealed boxes containing two complete copies of a referral to the House of Representatives. This referral is filed in conformity with the requirements of Title 28, United Sates Code, Section 595(c), which provides that "[a]n independent counsel shall advise the House of Representatives of any substantial and credible information which such independent counsel receives... that may constitute grounds for an impeachment". --from Kenneth W. Starr's letter to Congress.

Amazon.com Review

Here it is--the result of four years of investigative research, at an approximate cost of $40 million. Back in 1994, Kenneth Starr was appointed to investigate a series of investments made by Bill and Hillary Clinton; the Whitewater allegations never bore fruit, but then somebody whispered stories about the president and an intern named Monica Lewinsky into Starr's ear. He and his team of prosecutors sniffed around, and this is what they've come up with: "According to Ms. Lewinsky, she and the President had ten sexual encounters, eight while she worked at the White House and two thereafter." The details are bathetic in their precision: "during many of their sexual encounters," Starr notes, "the President stood leaning against the doorway of the bathroom across from the study, which, he told Ms. Lewinsky, eased his sore back." And yes, as far as we know, that was the president's semen on Monica's navy dress.

Whether or not it's the government's job to produce hackneyed narratives about young women who find themselves falling in love with powerful men is for voters to decide, but this story would be rejected outright by readers of Harold Robbins or Jackie Susann were it not for the newsworthy elements. Of course, there's also the second half of the report, in which Starr explains how Clinton's attempts to prevent his relationship with Lewinsky from becoming public knowledge constitute grounds for his impeachment. That's the part of the document that matters most from a political perspective ... but it's doubtful that it'll be the part that lingers in historical memory. (Note: You can also read the Starr report in electronic form for free at a number of locations on the Web, including the Library of Congress site and the commercial sites AOL.com, Netscape Netcenter, and Yahoo!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done, Ken Starr, September 16, 1998

Contrary to what your biased review indicates, this is not a book at all. It is a factual report of what happend. It was all made necessary by Clintons's acts and evasions. To compare it with a Harold Robbins novel or to pornography simply misses the mark entirely. It is a comprehensive report to congress.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing and Thought-provoking, October 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The STARR REPORT: THE INDEPENDENT COUNSEL'S COMPLETE REPORT TO CONGRESS ON THE INVESTIGATION OF PRESIDENT CLINTON (Mass Market Paperback)
I think that people should form their own opinions of the Clinton scandal AFTER reading the Starr Report. Extremely well documented. This should be read by every American in order to get the story straight as to why Clinton is being accused of perjury. The report has been damned for being too sexually graphic. However, this is a necessity since the details refute everything Clinton said during the Paula Jones deposition. Instead of saying Clinton is guilty or innocent based on one's emotional feelings for the man, an opinion should be formed after reading the Starr Report. I have passed on my copy of the book around in the office and am encouraging everyone to read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars America's in big trouble!, September 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The STARR REPORT: THE INDEPENDENT COUNSEL'S COMPLETE REPORT TO CONGRESS ON THE INVESTIGATION OF PRESIDENT CLINTON (Mass Market Paperback)
It isn't about sex. It never was about sex. But, unless a sane person owns their own television network, the truth will never air on national networks. This manuscript is a piece of history. Many Americans believed that Clinton's first term in office was basically a free ride on the successes of his predecessor (Bush pushed for the balanced budget). Many Americans also believed that his second term would be littered with personal problems and make him ineffective as a president. In light of these facts, he was elected to office. Many of the votes came from undiscerning Americans that believe the media. This entire affaire in the life of a president and the impact on this country is a reflection on the power of the media, the poor quality of public education, liberalism versus conservatism, destruction of family values in America, the advancement of evil humanistic values, and the average citizens inability to choose a man with strong character and the right principles. The warning signs have been there since the beginning. He didn't serve his country in time of war and certainly hasn't done so in time of peace. The ideals and bills he has passed for his own agenda will undermine America permanently.

The report and the consequences are weighed against America, not the individual man that has been set upon a pedestal and judged openly. It is a testament to bad times in America.
