Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Designed for pet owners and active households, this 850-watt hot-water vacuum cleans carpets deeply after they've been dry-vacuumed. With onboard attachments connected to an 8-foot hose, the vacuum also wet-cleans upholstery, stairs, and bare floors and vacuums up liquid spills. The vacuum applies a mixture of hot tap water and cleaning solution (16-ounce bottle included), brushes the mixture into carpet fibers with two sets of bristles, and then vacuums up the dirty water. No faucet hookup is required. Both clean-water and dirty-water tanks detach. The vacuum cleans in both forward and backward directions and has a finger trigger for applying cleaning mixture. Made of plastic, it's lightweight (20 pounds), stands 45 inches high, has a toe-operated on/off switch, and comes with a 20-foot cord. Assembly requires just two screws (which are included). An accompanying booklet explains assembly and operation, and Hoover warrants the vacuum against defects for one year. --Fred Brack

2.0 out of 5 stars OK, but no scrubbing action, August 22, 2001
This review is from: Hoover F5837900 Steamvac Supreme (Kitchen)
The box on my unit said "Dual Brush Action", which apparently means that the brush drags on the carpet whether you're pushing it forwards or backwards. I had assumed that "action" meant the brush actually moved (silly me). Please note that I did not buy mine from Amazon, and that dubious "Dual Brush Action" claim is conspicuously absent in the description here.

This model SteamVac works well enough (how wrong can you go with hot detergent water?) but not nearly as well as the fancier Hoovers that have rotating brushes, which I have also used. I don't think the modest price difference comes close to compensating for the loss in cleaning power. I'll be trading mine for a better model with a moving brush.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good buy for the money, August 17, 2001

I learned that you really do need to vacuum the floor before using the steam vac. It was worth a try...

Pros: Cleans well, although not perfectly - pretreating and repeated cleaning was required more than I'd hoped, and it wasn't THAT dirty! The rug dried within an hour or two - faster than expected. Surprisingly maneuverable. I cleaned my cat's futon (so she's spoiled, sue me) that was truly nasty with the steam vac and it came out really nice. She approves.

Cons: I was quite disappointed with its performance on bare (vinyl) floors. The "bare floor attachment" doesn't stay on easily. Repeating a cleaning in a few days to finish the job was a minor inconvenience (it's a new toy) and made a big difference.

3.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for., January 5, 2002

I wish I'd spent more and bought a better model with the power brushes. This model does an adequate job and is simple enough to operate that I use it frequently. I wish that they had made it so that the front cover over the area where the water is sucked up could be cleaned. I hate putting it away with the gunk like carpet fibers and lint in there (ok, so I'm a little obsessive).
