More About the Author

Dan Hurwitz (born January 30, 1929) is an American author and professional engineer.

He graduated from Washington University, St. Louis, in 1950 with a B. S. in Structural Engineering (science and engineering honor societies). He served as a reserve officer in the US Navy aboard ship in the Korean War. During his tour of duty he received a patent on a specialized surveying transit and shortly after discharge was awarded a second patent on a celestial navigation drafting device.

In 1970 he and his wife, Camilla, formed On-Line Data, Inc., a computer software shop offering a proprietary set of programs for manufacturers of wood building components. In 1995 the Hurwitz's and Dr. Phil Zwart, the company's vice president, were awarded the Automated Builder Achievement in Housing Award.

Since his retirement from On-Line in 1996, Hurwitz has devoted his time to writing. His articles have appeared in Liberty Magazine, The Independent Review, and the World Future Society's website. In 2006, he published Stelzer's Travels, A Voyage to a Sensible Planet, a utopian novel.

Hurwitz maintains a literary e-quarterly blog in which, every three months, he posts articles on politics, economics, social questions, and religion. From time to time, short stories also make it to the list. Rather than simply carping on what he finds wrong with the world, Hurwitz puts on his can-do engineer's cap and seeks out solutions--often widely divergent from popular opinion. A sense of the blog's character is conveyed by the Samuel Butler quotation on its masthead: "I have never written on any subject unless I believed the authorities on it were hopelessly wrong."

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Stelzer's Travels, June 17, 2006
By
Philip B. Zwart (Estes Park, CO USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: STELZER'S TRAVELS: A Voyage to a Sensible Planet (Paperback)
This intriguing tale of travel to another planet makes for very good reading. The underlying story will touch your heart. It includes a good deal of humor and suspense. And, the imaginative science-fiction ideas, different from anything this reader has previously encountered, are smoothly introduced in a way that enhances the overall effect.

But don't think that this is merely a good piece of fiction. Like most of us, the author clearly does not approve of some aspects of our current religious, political and economic systems. Such as: How do we get a truly free enterprise system that keeps the wealthy from enjoying an automatic advantage over the rest of us? What kind of electoral system would result in candidates actually being capable and dedicated, as opposed to merely looking good? How do we avoid having candidates and elected officials cater to special interests? The author addresses these when describing how his "better world" functions. You may agree or disagree with some or all of the concepts. In any case, you will likely find them innovative and worthy of consideration.

Though not a rapid reader, I was captivated, and read the book rather quickly. It held my interest. Being confident that others will enjoy this entertaining work, I have been recommending it to all my friends. This book could become a best seller!
