I can't elp but to be impressed by the unreal sound quality of this receiver. This is from a guy who has a Mark Levinson system for music. I know music. This receiver blew my mind.

1.0 out of 5 stars SONY DA-5000ES DISAPPOINTMENT !
AFTER SETTING THIS RECEIVER UP, I TURNED UP THE VOLUME IN A LARGE ROOM WITH VERY HIGH QUALITY SPEAKERS AND WAS SHOCKED BY THE LACK OF PUNCH IN A RECEIVER THAT THE SELLER STATED PRODUCED 170 WRMS PER CHANNEL. THE VOLUME CONTROL HAS A LIMITER FEATURE AND TURNING IT UP DOES NOTHING TO INCREASE THE VOLUME FURTHER. IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE MAYBE 75 WATTS PER CHANNEL. SO, I WROTE A...

Theres a reason this is a this is a $ 1500 unit.

Yes you can get receivers with the same power ( FTC sine wave rated) for a lot less money, but listen to the depth, the realism and the purity of the frequencies and you'll think that this is a $10,000 tube amp.

Add in all the great home theater features and this is all you need.

The Sony ES series is really an elevated standard. You can buy Sony gear anywhere from Sears to Walmart, don't let that fool you. This is a serious piece of gear.

I've been testing my CD collection on it and hooked up my turntable to it to test my old vinyl albums. The DSP had me skeptical for a while but it works great. Usually I like my music pure and unmanipulated, but the DSP is fun for DVD's.

I'm still working on the remote. It's overly complex and the only thing I can really fault about this product.

If you care about music sound quality as well as want a home theater system in one cabinet, this is the hot ticket here.

The damn thing is built like a tank and also has a 5 years parts and labor warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars unbelievable clarity and power, June 9, 2008
This review is from: SONY STR-DA5000ES ES ( Elevated Standard ) Audio / Video Receiver (Electronics)
My first SONY I still have and it's 20 years old (STR-D2070). Still works perfect but I wanted new technology. I went for the 5000ES and can say I'm beyond impressed. I have pushed it to the limit over the past couple years and it has never failed. Sony put a lot of technology into this receiver and combined it with 40 years of experience. They have truly created a product ahead of it's time.

1.0 out of 5 stars SONY DA-5000ES DISAPPOINTMENT !, August 8, 2010
This review is from: SONY STR-DA5000ES ES ( Elevated Standard ) Audio / Video Receiver (Electronics)
SO, I WROTE A LETTER TO SONY AND ASKED FOR THE TECHNICAL SPECS OF THE UNIT, PARTICULARLY THE POWER OUTPUT RATING AT SPECIFIED DISTORTION LEVELS 20-20,000 HZ RATING. MY LETTER WAS IGNORED AND NOT ANSWERED. NEXT, I WENT ON THE SONY WEBSITE AND FOUND THIS RECEIVER. WHEN I TRIED TO GET THE TECH SPECS ON THIS RECEIVER, SONY SAID, "TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR THIS UNIT ARE NOT AVAILABLE". AS I SUSPECTED, THIS RECEIVER PUTS OUT FAR LESS RMS WATTAGE THAN CLAIMED BY THE SELLING DEALER AND I WAS DUPED INTO BUYING THIS RECEIVER (FOR $ 1,100.00) ON INFLATED POWER CLAIMS AND I SHOULD HAVE PURCHASED THE DENON UNIT WHICH RATES IT'S UNITS AT 20-20,000 HZ @ 0.02 THD AND DOES NOT SELL THEIR RECEIVERS BY PULLING THE WOOL OVER YOUR EYES WITH INFLATED POWER CLAIMS FOR THEIR UNITS. I NOW USE THE UNIT AS A PRE-AMP WITH EXTERNAL POWER AMPS AND THIS IS WORKING OUT, AS THE PER AMP AND SURROUND DECODING ARE GOOD. MY MAIN COMPLAINTS ARE WITH THE POWER AMPS IN THE SONY DA 5000ES. THEY PRODUCE A LOT LESS POWER THAN CLAIMED, AND SONY HAS LOST ME AS A CUSTOMER, BECAUSE I NO LONGER TRUST THEIR SPECIFICATIONS FOR THEIR PRODUCTS AND THEY BLEW ME OFF WHEN I WROTE THEM AN INQUIRY ABOUT THIS RECEIVER, PROBABLY BECAUSE I WAS CORRECT ABOUT THE TRUE AMP OUTPUTS AND THIS IS FURTHER EVIDENCED BY NO PUBLISHED TECH SPECS ON THEIR WEBSITE ! BUYER BEWARE ON SONY ELECTRONICS !

3.0 out of 5 stars electronics tech...., June 13, 2011
This review is from: SONY STR-DA5000ES ES ( Elevated Standard ) Audio / Video Receiver (Electronics)
i do not own this receiver but i can point out a potential unintentional flaw with a few of the reviews i have read. all i really want to say is that this receiver pulls a max of ~1586.6 watts, the average home circuit for kitchen, bedroom, or living room allows for 15 amps at 115~120 volts. that means that if the circuit is dedicated to one room then the total amount of power you are allowing to the receiver is going to be 1800 watts, now subtract the other entertainment components from the equation such as tv(120~450 watts on average but lets say 260 which is pretty standard) dvd/bluray player(about 30) any powered sub woofer (typically 200 watts but up over 1kw, so 500 for the sake of argument)any lights you have on (100 per light lets say x2) and any other plugged in decorations or furnishing , which we wont take into consideration any more items, you have a total peak consumption of 2576.6 watts, so it is no surprise that i see a lot of people saying receivers are not putting out the rated power. if you want a high power home theater system and all the cool things that go with it make sure you upgrade your power source to handle the new toys you get, if you are doing a complete system with all the bells and whistles in a living room i suggest getting at least a 50 amp (120*50=6000) circuit breaker to allow room for error in terms of multi room circuits and mass power consumption. keep in mind in the world of engineering amplifiers what rms is actually calculated out to be is about .74 times the full power potential , that is true for car and home. one more thing is mention of sound quality, not to call anyone out , and to take into consideration the tastes of people, the only way to determine sound quality, definitively, is to preform either a white noise spectrum analysis or to tone test each specific frequency for sonic accuracy, you usually will find a deviation in the end product so i recommend a many band equalizer to level out the imperfections.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SONY STR-DA5000ES ES ( Elevated Standard ) Audio / Video Receiver (Electronics)
I have been a true SONY buyer for many years, so I have no doubt in the systems quality or capabilities. For the money SONY is one of the best bang for your buck electronic suppliers. I have not been able to try it out as my house burned domn on Christmas night,(we were not home thank God)and I am awaiting my speaker system. As for the shipping of the product from the supplier, I opened the box(es) and removed the bubble wrap and was astonished to find that the speaker terminals on the right side(12 of them to be exact) were pushed to the left undoubtedly from mis handeling during shipping. As I stated before I am awaiting speakers in order to find out if there was any internal damage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sony Service Sucks, December 1, 2004

Sony replaced an older es model of mine with this after my old one broke. It took Sony "9 months" to replace the receiver. After numerous calls to rude operators with no answers I finally threatened to sue. Only then did I get my replacement. My new receiver has been broken since i got it and am afraid to return it.

Sony makes decent products but even the store where i bought the receiver says Sony has the worst customer service.

If you want a throw away product buy a Sony but dont rely on their service.

I will never buy Sony again.
