My respect and admiration for Mike Wellman has only grown after reading "Stubs." Though I don't share the same passion for baseball, I appreciate the loyalty that a true fan exhibits, and it's impossible not to get caught up in the author's love of the game. However, more than a tale of a woe-is-me Cub enthusiast, I was impressed with the familial interchanges. Even thrown some curve balls, the pure love of this father/husband for his children and wife comes shining through. Congratulations, Wellman family, maybe this year...

This is the perfect book to read at this time of year with the baseball season just around the corner! But even if you're not a baseball or sports fan, his intertwining of parenthood and sports is spellbinding!

Even not being a parent myself, I still so enjoyed the stories of the relationships with Michael and his family all growing up together in the beauty of the heart of the Midwest.

But being the huge baseball fan that I am, his description of trips to and from Wrigley Field and other sports journeys were so captivating, especially the stories showing his unbelievably extreme enthusiasm as a Cubs fan! I felt like I was sitting right there in the bleachers with him waiting for the foul ball from Mark McGwire to land in his glove inside Wrigley or taking his son to the All-Star Game in Seattle!

This is a must read for parents, sports fans, and just those that all-around love life!

This is the second book I've read from this fabulous author, and I'm so hoping there are many more to come!

Through these shows, their bonds grew ever stronger. "Stubs: A Father's Tickets to the Greatest Shows on Earth" is a memoir of Michael Wellman as he tells a story of how he has grown as a person through attending these various shows with his children. These endeavors have taught him much and have created a unique type of bond he wouldn't be able to get otherwise. "Stubs" is a charming pick, highly recommended.

Michael Wellman does it again--brings back great memories of growing up in the midwest while working at being a father. Being a sports oriented individual generally and a Cubs baseball fan, specifically, Mike starts with what he knows and soon finds that his interests, although perhaps not the same as his kids, have a place in the art of parenthood. His three children and sometimes his wife, are invited by a loving father/husband to learn all he knows about life while he introduces them to the world as he sees it through games at Wrigley field and other notable venues.
Although I am not as avid a baseball fan as the author, I did glean quite a bit of insight and appreciation for the game, the players and the history of such through the book. My favorite parts of the book however, were the interactions between the father and the children as they grew to know, love and respect each other for what they brought to the family. The author's devotion and love for his family is refreshing and simple, without being sickeningly sweet. Humor is always present, which kept things real throughout.
This is the second book by this author that I have read. Both were easy to read and I got hooked right away, not wanting to put either down until they were read from cover to cover. I hope he has more in the making. I relate to the midwest (specifically Des Moines) aspects as well as his viewpoint as a baby boomer growing up in the greatest of times. Nice job Mike.
