I now look back at all my other projects and think of how much time I could have saved owning this.

I never use my electronic finder anymore; this is simply too much fun to use, and is almost always the perfect tool for the job.

There is no room for error, either you hit a stud or you don't, no intermittent signals that only frustrate you..

I have bought a variety of electronics stud finders over the last 40 years. I find the Franklin Sensor Pro Sensor 710 the most practical. However, even with today's improved technology, none of these companies have come up with a stud finder under $100 that can factor out the insulation well enough. You still get some false readings.

For probing through sheetrock, this manual stud finder gives you absolute physical verification where the stud starts and ends. The only place this does not work is for newer homes in the garage ceiling. Most building codes require a thicker or two layers of sheetrock. The needle in this device is not long enough for that.

I use this needle plunger to supplement my electronic Franklin Sensor. The Franklin gets me very close. Then I use this to confirm where the edges of the studs are.

Contrary to popular opinion, out here in CA the studs are not always installed in a straight line up and down. If the 2 x 4 has slight curl, that's the way it gets nailed in behind the sheetrock. This is especially true the garage ceiling where the studs have a longer run.

This is a great tool. I use it all of the time in my Habitat for Humanity work. It is better than electronic finders in some applications. Really handy to find horizontal boards behind a wall. Price is good also. It has spare needles in the handle. They sometimes get bent if dry wall or plaster is very hard.

Precise, and does exactly what it's meant to. Leaves almost invisible holes, and is one of my favorite tools. I never use my electronic finder anymore; this is simply too much fun to use, and is almost always the perfect tool for the job.

I have an older version of this and I love it. Electronic finders work pretty well, but you are never 100% certain of where the edges are. This needle-style finder helps me know for sure. Properly used, it leaves a tiny hole, so small you really can't see it. Highly recommended.

I am a handy mom and proud I was able to mount my 50" LCD using this sucker. I tried so many crap stud finders and this is the sure bet. It is as accurate as you can get without cutting a hole in the drywall. I now look back at all my other projects and think of how much time I could have saved owning this.

I picked this up because I used to use a tiny drill bit when I wanted to find a stud. Every electronic stud finder I ever owned was inconsistent. One time it would should a stud, go back over the same spot and nothing or NOT show a stud where clearly there was one... I also have found in my home studs are NOT exactly 16" on center, so finding one was not always the key to finding an adjacent stud... When I am hanging something I like to hit the center of the stud. Imagine hanging a wall mount tv bracket and have the fastener inserted near the very edge of the stud and risk it tearing out? Remember some studs could be bowed so if you are placing vertical fasteners in the same stud, well putting a level to the first hole isn't a guarantee that the next hole in the same stud is in fact centered..
One time I needed to avoid a stud because the shelf I was hanging wasn't wide enough to secure to 2 studs and where I wanted to hang it wasn't centered to use even one stud. So I was using toggle bolts. I clearly found 2 openings in my wall for toggle bolts, which require some space behind the drywall to expand. Well the first one went in and the 2nd one was twisting on an angle when I tried securing the screw to expand the wings.. I came to find out that the hole I drilled for the toggle was about 1/8 inch away from a stud, so the toggle wings were actually hitting the stud as it expanded and would not open properly.. So sometimes avoiding a stud is required and with this tool I can do either. I actually use it in conjunction with another tool (magnet) to locate a stud by finding a drywall screw (see my review on that tool). Then I poke small holes to find one edge of the stud, from there I know I have 1 1/2 to the other side and its easy to center a stud for maximum strength.

I had a very difficult time finding studs with this item. I think that the concept was excellent, but the execution fell short. I read the instructions on how to properly use this item. Every time I thought I hit a stud with the needle, I was not 100% sure if I did or didn't. The main thing to find the studs that I used was the magnet. That was the best indicator of where the studs were located. I wish I could give this product a better score, but I just can't. Maybe other people had better luck with it than I did!
