This review is from: Stuff'n Nonsense (Vinyl)
STUFF 'N NONSENSE (CS 9799) is on COLUMBIA's 360 Sound red label. This reprocessed stereo LP was recorded in front of an audience sometime after Christmas 1968.
The album consists of Johnny Winters improvs based on audience suggestions. There's few laughs here mainly because situations aren't developed. Some actually end with incoherent mumbling. If a flashing APPLAUSE sign wasn't being used, then surely the clapping heard after a few segments is edited in. Gone are the long sketches of a decade earlier. In almost every case, he seems to look for a laugh to quit on. Thanks to lame requests, like an elephant wrapping a gift or a drill sergeant talking to a gorilla, Winters has little to work with and may even be bored by the effort. A good idea, relevant to Apollo 8 orbiting the moon, is thrown away on a sabotaged spacewalk joke. Johnny admits he can't do a motorcycle sound and when asked to explain his unique vocal noises, all he does is make a few of them. A chance to have the Red Baron speak in a Maude Frickert dogfight skit is passed on. Audience members favor scenarios with John Wayne, Maudie and 6½-year old Chester Honeyhugger. Gone are Elwood P. Suggins and the many fey characters Winters indulged in during his VERVE Records days.
