Another Sensitive Portrait of the Human Condition by Rohmer, August 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: SUMMER [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When I say "another" I don't mean that in a callous way. I meant it in a good way. Rohmer is one of the very few filmmakers who is so perceptive and really understands what humans are like. I see one film by Rohmer and I'm blown away by it. I see another film by Rohmer and I'm equally blown away by it. And as I'm getting ready to see a third film by Rohmer I'm thinking--there's no way he can do it again. But he does! He tops himself by making an even better film. That's exactly how I felt about Summer. I first saw Aviator's Wife and thought I am exactly like Francois. I'm in love with a woman who is carefree and free-spirited, but that same quality that I like is also my curse because the woman does not want to get involved with anyone on a serious basis. Next I saw Pauline at the Beach. I couldn't relate to any of the characters as I did with Francois--but I was still blown away by it for its sheer artistry and sensitivity. After that I saw this film--Summer. Of the three films I have just mentioned, I would have to say Summer is the best. In a world where gender and culture has no boundary--I could relate to the Delphine character. Yes, I know she's a woman and I'm a man. I also know she's French and I'm an American. Who cares! I could still relate to her character. I'm the type of person who is very particular of people yet at the same time enjoy being around people. That pretty much sums up Delphine's character as well. Summer is a sensitive portrait of what someone like Delphine goes through one summer vacation in France. She doesn't like to be alone but at the same time she has a hard time interacting with other people who are not like her. If you don't mind reading sub-titles and enjoy watching movies about the human condition--I highly recommend this film. By the way--I also liked Boyfriends and Girlfriends (also by Rohmer). You may want to check that out too.
