4.0 out of 5 stars Superfly
I appreciated this documentary on Frank Lucas. It gave me a better sense of the man's motives, criminal intelligence and his loyalty to family. It is a DVD that can be used in sociology, psychology and criminal behavior courses.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
Considering all the information and documentaries out on the subject of Frank Lucas and his Harlem Heydays, this one is extremely disappointing. Amateur and uninformative, this one was a stinker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right On the Money, February 1, 2008

This documentary is rigth on the money. It exposes frank Lucas. Frank's version of himself in the film American Gagnster is way overblown. In interviews Lucas claimed to have been a stand up guy and to have not told on anyone. Well that's not the case. This documentary exposes Frank Lucas to the core.

Micky Barnes was the cat who was really running Harlem. The people with first hand knowledge explain this in the documentary. Frank Lucas had weight and was making money but he was no where near being that person he was protrayed as being in the film "american Gangster".

The documentary also exposes some of the lies Ritchie Roberts(FBI) told.

The onlt thing that i didn't agree with is that at the end of the documentary they listed that Fat Cat was a snitch. Fat Cat wasn't a snitch. He didn't give up any information on Pappy Mason. Even Pappy Mason admits that Fat Cat's name wasn't in any of his paperwork(trail). The only person Fat Cat told on was himself. Fat Cat gave himself up and took all of the counts so his mother and sisters and family members wouldn't have to serve any time.

Until I saw the movie "American Gangster", I was oblivious to Frank Lucas, Nicky Barnes and ilk. I am a big fan of "The Wire" and was eager to learn more about this drug culture. I purchased this video and found it very interesting and informative. The interviews were top notch and very "straight from the horse's mouth". These were people who were there, in the thick of it!!! I do know that Hollywood has a way of tampering with the truth to make it more palatable for the masses and the information on this video gave me alot to ponder over what was already presented in "American Gangster"

Did you ever Stop to think, how did the Government keep Frank such a "Secret" all these years. You never heard his name in the movie "Prince of the City," nor "The French Connection." How amazing it took American Gangster to Rewrtie the book on which movie Finally told Us the TRUTH, just who Ran the Game in NY untouched..For so Freaking long. And what's a joke, is the fact that "American Gangster" was ignored for an Academy Award this year. Frank wouldn't like that..lol. How did he disappear from the DEA all those years? Or did he?

Thank you All for great reviews about a tremendous story in our lives. Could you imagine if Frank would have met Pablo Escabor?

Thanks Frank for releasing this documentary, and revealing a secret to Us all. God Bless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superfly?, December 7, 2009
This review is from: SUPERFLY: THE TRUE-UNTOLD STORY OF FRANK LUCAS THE AMERICANGANGSTER (DVD)
Lets face it whenever Denzel Washington stars in a movie, I have to see it although I don't normally pay the going rate for a night at the local theater, I usually wait till it becomes available on Netflix. Something told me to go see this movie and I did, three times worth and only once at the matinee price so that tells you how much I enjoyed the movie! I was facinated by this movie and the whole culture back then because that is the era that I grew up in although I was buffered from it because I was an extremely sheltered child and didn't even have any idea, never even heard of it, of what marijuana was until I had enlisted in the Navy and was at my first and last duty station Pearl Harbor Hawaii. I knew that the movie had to have exaggerated things even tho it was it was supposed to be a "true" story. I got this book and it would not have deterred me from watching the movie nor does it. As soon as it was available to buy I was at Walmart getting my copy. It's one of my favorite movies and I watch it at least once a month. I love the music in it and its just a damn good movie. Even tho this book/DVD said that Frank Lucas did not come up with this idea himself yadayada, even to manage something like this on the streets from what I saw took a great deal of ingenuity whether it was Frank Lucas or Nicky Barnes. Frank Lucas made a statement that I had to agree with in some respects when he said that he didn't make the addicts, they were already there and they were going to do whatever it takes to get whatever it is that they're hooked on. He was and, unfortunately, still is correct in that assumption. I didn't understand all that when that was happening in the 60's and 70's. I saw first hand what the crack epidemic did in the 90's. Frank Lucas likes to let you think that he was a Superfly that he didn't get put in jail but he did, quite a few times. Whether Nicky Barnes was first and Frank Lucas second with the title Superfly who knows. Nicky Barnes was also arrested and jailed many times. When you read this book and watch this DVD, you have to remember that these people are writing it from their perspective like Frank Lucas let American Gangster be done from his perspective. We also have to realize if we haven't after watching so many years from watching Law and Order that there will always be a deal made at the least amount of cost. That is just how the justice system works. DA's throughout the country will tell you that realistically they would love to see each and every criminal like Frank Lucas spend the rest of their natural lives in prison for the pain they have caused but, it can't happen that way because they have to look at the bigger picture. Having people like Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes rat on their fellow dealers is what they have to do. They don't want to see people like Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes hook up with a Pablo Escobar. If they have to make deals to keep that from happening then they have to look at the lesser of the two evils. They don't like it it but that's the way it is. American Gangster was and still is a great movie to watch as well as this film. You have to remember its mostly Hollywood. We may get a bit more of the truth with films like this one and series like American Gangster but we'll never know the truth. We might not want to know it either.
