5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking August 29, 2012
With the slew of (in my opinion) unoriginal games that seem to flood the market (shooters that imitate each other and generic "numbered titles") it seems like everything that is not published by some big company is simply not worth your money. Bastion is the perfect example of a game that manages to do what so few other games truly do: leave the user in awe.

Bastion tells a confusing story. Its about this boy who wakes up after a so called "Calamity" (a type of disaster) hits the world he lives in. Struggling for survival he runs off to the "Bastion" a type of floating "fortress" to which all people should go to seek refuge should there ever be a disaster. The Kid (as he is referenced to in the game) has to now reinforce the Bastion to restore the world he once knew, by collecting these shards and energy cores scattered around the fragments of his world that still exist. What makes the story so interesting here is how amazingly original and refreshing it is. There is no dialogue, however the game is told through a man called Rucks who narrates everything you (The Kid) do right from the beginning of a level to the end. Rucks is also the only survivor you have on the Bastion at the beginning, and he is the only character who is voiced over. Over the course of the game new characters get introduced, however you dont ever know much about them. To find out more about the characters (yourself included) you have to finish these so called Dream Worlds which are completely optional and a lot fun to play through. This method of storytelling (the narrator especially) makes Bastions story incredibly refreshing and interesting.

Bastion can best be described as an Action RPG.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Game May 15, 2013
By Ado
Verified Purchase
Fast/lazy review
+Looks hand-drawn, well animated, vibrant colors, 2D (or 2.5D?)
minor negative: You may need to get used to the positioning of your character/view of the game to attack certain enemies

+Great music, voice acting and sound effects

+Standard beat-em-up style, with some RPG elements. It might feel repetitive at times (but maybe you might be playing too much)
+Challenges changes up the pace
- I personally feel that it's easy even on the hardest mode

Replay Value
Aside from the semi New Game plus and challenges, there isn't much else to replay this game other than nostalgia. Although, i could be wrong

I look forward to the next game this developer makes.

much better to play with a controller than the keyboard. Some parts of the game might be really hard with a keyboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bastion of Hope March 16, 2013
By Ryan
Let me give you some insight into my opinion of indie games pre-Bastion. I hated them because no matter what, there was always some facet that was missing, something to remind me that this game could have been really interesting, but due to a lower budget some level of polish would be inevitably missing. I probably should have written this review before To the Moon, because it was Bastion that single handedly restored my faith in indie gaming and pushed me to try another indie game like To the Moon. Bastion is a unique, surprisingly deep and yes - indie - hack and slash RPG for the PC, MAC, Xbox 360, and iOS.

The game starts out with no cut scenes, no opening cinematic, and no background or context. It simply starts with the main protagonist, introduced by an old and weathered voice, as "the Kid." The opening moments of Bastion are perhaps the most intriguing. This is where the dynamic narration is introduced. As the player controls the Kid and begins to interact with his surroundings, the narrator will deliver his lines like that of Homer....or Barney the Dinosaur or you know, other great story tellers. But rather than be tethered to time triggers like dialog present in most games, what the narrator says and when he says it is often up to the player. The true impact of this comes when you fall off an edge for the first time, and realize that even this is seamlessly woven into the greater tapestry of this story.

The game's mechanics are simple enough. You navigate through various and diversified levels with the wasd cluster and use the left mouse button for your main weapon, the right for your alternate weapon, and the middle mouse wheel for your special activated ability. What took me by surprise however, were how many different combinations there were available.

This game is quite simply: lovely. It is gorgeous to look at and to listen to. From start to finish there are a wide variety of different creatures, and atmospheres, with an awesome blend of different music styles.

The story is really well done, too. I don't generally like video games that revolve heavily around a story. I'm much more interested in just messing around. But since the story here is told by the narrator as you play, you cannot escape it. Nor do you want to. It is interesting, and the writing is quite good. As you play, you're getting bits of the story relevant to what you're doing, so it's even better because you're not interrupted to sit through a video most of the time.

The gameplay is quite fun, lots of variety, though perhaps a bit less than challenging at times. But there are extra modes, and ways to enhance the bad guys that allow you to change that as you would like to.

It is hard for me to overstate how nice this game is to play. It is relaxing, and challenging enough to keep you going. Extra modes allow you to get quite a bit out it once you've completed the story, but even if the game ended with the story, you are getting a very well polished game in Bastion.
