Strong core, attractive envelope.
The most important new features of Suse Linux 9.1 are located under the surface--but they are by no means hidden: the new kernel 2.6 excels with substantially increased performance and invariably outstanding stability. For instance, the DMA mode greatly enhances the performance when running multimedia applications (particularly audio and video streaming) or burning CDs and DVDs. The improved power management gives notebooks more stamina. A YaST module allows the configuration of all options of the power saving standard ACPI.
Ready for 64.
Suse Linux 9.1 Professional offers more power for users of 64-bit CPUs. It is the first operating system to support Intel's Extended Memory 64 Technology and AMD's Athlon 64 processors for workstations. When we say "support", we mean it: almost all of our software has been ported for the 64-bit architecture and is able to exploit the performance potential of the new chips.
Easier integration in heterogeneous networks.
Thanks to Samba 3, Suse Linux 9.1 Professional can be integrated in heterogeneous home networks comprising Linux and Windows hosts. Linux hosts can be integrated in Windows domains and grouped to active directories. The possibility to set up virtual Samba servers comes handy for testing and consolidating hardware.
For more than ten years, new versions of Suse Linux have impressed with innovative features. Properties that make Suse Linux 9.1 Professional one of the most powerful and comfortable PC operating systems ever:

This review is from: SUSE LINUX PROF 9.1 UPDATE (CD-ROM)
This is the first Linux distribution I've owned that includes both the 2.6 kernel and support for AMD 64 bit processors. I just got an AMD 64 bit based laptop, and it installed without a problem although the knowledge base says there have been problems with booting Windows on some dual boot machines. I originally had problems with my scsi based scanner, but an update cured that. A note to new users: it is important to run the online update immediately after installation; it will save you all sorts of grief. For a brand new kernel, and a new version of KDE (the default window manager), there were very few problems with this release. It is a major release in spite of its .1 designation, and the first release since Novel bought SuSE. Many of us had fears that Novel would do its usual number on SuSE, but our fears have so far not been justified. I have currently installed this release on three of my machines without problems.
