I can't say enough good things about this saw. There is simply no better camping/backpacking saw available.
Build Quality: Build quality is great! The all aluminum construction is sturdy when put together. The rigidity of the saw comes from tightening the wingnut on the blade. You have to unscrew it and rescrew it to assemble the saw, so make sure that you don't lose the wingnut in the process!
Ergonomics and Functionality: It's easy to saw with one hand on the handle under the wingnut. If you need additional leverage, you can grap the upper portion on the red part of the saw with your other hand. Sawing logs un to 4" is no problem. Larger logs (6"-8") can be done with this saw too, you will just need to move around the log to get through it since the aluminum frame will hit the log otherwise. The blade on this saw tears through dead trees in a heartbeat; just make sure not to forget the WD40.
Carryability: Closed, the Sven Saw is 17" long and about an inch wide. at 15 ounces it's fairly lightweight. It's easy to ride inside a backpack or strapped to the side. They also make a 21" model which is bigger and heavier. Unless you need to do a lot of firewood processing for winter camping, I'd stick with the 17" for your wood processing needs.
Bottom Line: Although I love this saw, I wish that I had spent the extra $10 to get the Sawvivor 15". The Sawvivor 15" packs up smaller and lighter than the Sven Saw 15" while still retaining top notch build quality. I'm actually thinking about selling my Sven Saw and getting a Sawvivor... the old saying "Buy nice or but twice" really is true.
Very light weight : 15oz.
Very sharp blade that 3/4 inch wide.
Very rugged, lightweight and strong.
Perfect for backpacking and other uses
I have both this 15" version as well as the larger 21" and both are very capable. The 15" is better for backpacking & the larger version for canoe camping or even home use. Ultimately it depends on your needs. This will easily process logs up to 4 - 5 inches.
The only negative about this saw is the replacement blades. A 15 inch blade is almost the same price as the saw which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You would think that it would be a bit less expensive.
Assembly is easy just as breaking it down is.
When I needed a smaller one for backpacking light, I tried the 15" version. Ridiculously sharp!
My only issue is that if you drop that wing nut while in the bush, you are screwed. Solution? Carry a spare!
I also epoxied a thick SS washer onto the wing nut, and now it is far more secure and easier to tighten.
I read all the review that claim a folding saw will do as well, but it just ain't so. These are so ridged and deep-bladed that they can do more work with far less effort and with just a few more ounces. Get the larger one for real serious camp cutting due to much longer strokes, get the smaller one for UL packing only.
Be sure to tighten that wing nut very well or blade can buckle and will lose sharpness more easily.
Tape a few bandaids to the upper portion of the handle for safe keeping as assembling the saw can lead to unexpected nicks. Ya just never know.
