Seriously, This Is Way Better Than Many Claim It To Be..., August 10, 2010
This review is from: SVP T500-Bk FULL HD 1440x1080p Digital Camcorder + Camera with 2.5" LCD, 20x Zoom, Leather Body, HDTV Output (2 Lithium batteries Included) (Electronics)
I purchased this camera as a cheap alternative to the more expensive HD camcorders on the market.
There has not been one second of regret in my mind since that day nearly a year ago...
It was purchased as a Christmas gift for my girlfriend, together we document abandoned locations (not ghost hunters, we are historians).
Therein lies the reason I went with a cheaper HD video camera, I expected it to die from abuse within the first year of use.
I am incredibly surprised by it's reliability, this thing has been through some AWFUL conditions, severe heat, humidity, dust, and even a few down-pours.
It has survived all these events with flying colors, and to this day provides us with great HD footage for our films.
We did make a few alterations to it though, but these are things you would do to any camcorder you buy.
First we added a wide-angle lens, the default viewing area is a bit too tight, even when zoomed-out all the way.
Second, we attached an external LED lamp, which can be found here on Amazon (with the mounting arm) for about $30.
An extra battery or two is also key, and very inexpensive to come by.
The only real complaints I have are:
First, that the microphone is in an awkward spot to pick up audio from in front of the camera.
It captures the speaking voice of the person manning the camera beautifully, but other subjects are a bit muted and with some static.
This is not an issue to us, because all of our audio is recorded via a digital recorder and later synced up in editing.
It can prove to be a problem for those using this camcorder for more "traditional" means...
Second, the colors could be a bit more vivid in in-direct lighting.
In outdoor sunlight things look beautiful, anything less, and they get a bit washed-out.
So, in the end this is a much better camcorder than it honestly has any right to be.
Amazing resolution and, extremely reliable, and very comfortable to handle.
Four stars.
