5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tactical game
This is by far the best PC FPS tactical game I've played. It is most similar to the Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear series, except it is less planning-oriented and more action. The graphics far surpass the R6 series with much more detailed textures. Compared to the other popular FPS games (UT/Q3/Counter-Strike/etc.), the game's pace is slowed down to a much more realistic...

1.0 out of 5 stars if you like terrible graphics, and even worse gameplay... try this complete waste of time!
when i got this, i was expecting a really cool and kinda creepy FPS... but instead i got a game where all you do is raid buildings for criminals. sounds ok right? well if you put in the terrible gameplay, graphics, and absolutly no music... this game starts to really suck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tactical game, December 28, 2001

This review is from: SWAT 3 Game of The Year Edition (CD-ROM)
This is by far the best PC FPS tactical game I've played. It is most similar to the Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear series, except it is less planning-oriented and more action. The graphics far surpass the R6 series with much more detailed textures. Compared to the other popular FPS games (UT/Q3/Counter-Strike/etc.), the game's pace is slowed down to a much more realistic level. Instead of running from room to room dodging bullets (which I find repetitive), you often have to stop at a doorway, scope it using an optiwand camera or by leaning in, and use flashbangs/CS gas to stun suspects before disabling them. SWAT3 has a much more intelligent AI than R6, both for your squad members in single-player and for suspects as well.

The co-operative multiplayer is probably the best feature in this game. You can play over a LAN or the internet (although the internet servers have connection issues) and the game requires some teamwork to complete missions successfully. There is also an active community that releases mods and missions to this game which you can download.

The only drawback is that the game's engine seems to require a fast processor to get high framerates, probably due to the high level of detail. It was still playable on a Celeron 466/Voodoo3 machine, but even on an Athlon 1.4GHz/Radeon DDR system, the game seemed a little choppy at times.

I definitely recommend checking this game out.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS GAME IS #1, Seriously., December 4, 2001
This review is from: SWAT 3 Game of The Year Edition (CD-ROM)
SWAT 3 is flat out one of the best games there is for computers. It's easy to learn to play, the missions are great, the weapons are great. It's full of strategy and full of good solid action. If your looking for a game to get involved with for more than a couple days, this is for you. It's worth every dollar. Every time you beat a mission, your going to be diving into the next one. It's a non stop action game that really gets you involved. I HIGHLY reccomend this game to all your serious gamers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Intriguing...., October 9, 2004
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SWAT 3 Game of The Year Edition (CD-ROM)
From start to end, this game has non-stop, heart-racing, adrenaline-pumping action, through the downtown high rises and the suburbs of Los Angeles.

This game is very real, and that's why I mention that it's basically nerve-racking and somewhat horrifying if you don't know where and when your "tango" will kill you out of nowhere. I have had some very memorable moments on the 50th floor of the LA City Hall mission, midnight, where the office room was pitch black with the dim lights in the background. Tangos just erupt with gunfire and scare the daylights out of ya, that's how real this tactical game is, especially when they scream and laugh with a devilish tone, really.

The weapons are totally realistic with that Swat force type sound to it. You know, I was ordering myself to order my enemy to get down to the ground, very loudly, and had to kill my enemy with the AK47 while my team brought him down! What I'm saying is that this type of action just doesn't occur in any other games I've played!

I absolutely love the missions/levels. This one level, an underground sewer storm drain mission, where you had to disarm 6 bombs or so, it was pitch black, but I could see well with my flashlight. With my team members behind me, they caught an enemy down the tunnel with full force, yelling, and bone-crushing resistance! What a scene though!

You shouldn't be worried about graphics--they have been fine for me for the last three years or so, and I have had graphics cards down to 16 BIT, 64 MB memory, and it still worked very satisfyingly.

Planning is a cinch, provided you hit the right commands at the right time (keyboard-wise), while PLAYING. The developers of this game make those commands worthwhile, I tell you. Recently, on a mission where I was to detain a suspect that was part of a domestic crime, I ordered two of the five of my team members to each throw a flashbang and a frag grenade. What a scene! Total action, enemies eliminated in the bathroom with the use of these nifty commands. You can also direct your team members to other locations, ask them for a lightstick, all kinds of stuff.

Nothing is more intensifying and chilling as SWAT 3. I've played a lot of Rainbow Six games. But this game is much more than that. In Swat 3, planning is very realistic with the specific orders it provides, graphics are excellent and show eye-candy on the details, gameplay is so real, sound is terrifyingly real but is so very REAL!!!--like I said before, ADRENALINE-PUMPING!!

5.0 out of 5 stars a nice surprise, February 16, 2003

I bought this to tide me over until RAVEN SHIELD and BLACK HAWK DOWN come out next month. It's great. Basically you are in command of an LAPD elite SWAT team in charge of defusing various situations, most involving hostage rescue. The in-game commands are simple and easy to learn. You can point and click to command a team to "bang and clear" a room, and the space bar brings up all available weapons and tactical items. Also, unlike a lot of games, the suspects are placed randomly throughout the map, making each try different. Also, unlike RAINBOW, you can arrest or kill suspects (although many suspects prefer to go down fighting). It will take a bit of time to learn the in game commands. You don't have to plan out a mission in detail like you do in RAINBOW. Your choice of weapons is not great, but you have enough selection to do the job.

This is more than just a game but a learning tool. It's meant to have great fun and learn what swat teams really go through. I have so much respect for these people after playing this game. There's so much you can do, so much you can learn it's mind numbing. Once I started playing I couldn't stop. I haven't had this much fun in awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good game, April 9, 2003
This review is from: SWAT 3 Game of The Year Edition (CD-ROM)
The best strategy based fps, IMHO. I really love the command interface. Super-[inexpensive] because it's not new, with really good graphics (actually, I was surprised at the amount of proc/graphic power that it demanded given the age of the game). Plus it takes place in LA -- which automatically makes it good 8^P. All around good buy of a great game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good gameplay, runs on almost all systems, etc., July 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: SWAT 3 Game of The Year Edition (CD-ROM)
SWAT 3 has great gameplay, combined with good controls and a realistic AI. Also worth noting is that the AI enemies are placed in random locations throughout the maps, allowing for more interesting replays of missions (the bad guys aren't always in the same spot!).

Another thing that's worth noting is that the game will run on almost any system (Celeron processor? No problem!). I've personally observed it running at fast rates on fairly old computers that have Celeron processors.

The only downside to the game is its infamous last mission. The last mission tries to force the player to move quickly through the map (due to a timer), in a failed attempt to delay the time that it takes for someone to complete the game. This only results in the last mission not encouraging the player traits that are so heavily encouraged in previous missions: patience and strategy.

Over all, though, it's a great game. I recommend that you buy it.
