Editorial Reviews

Review

SWAT is a compelling book on a subject that could be dry and brittle. Tim presents his topic by telling a story that everyone in business can relate to. It s easy to read, and also realistic, humorous, and a great learning experience. I have worked with systems for over 30 years and I even learned some new things. If you want to get a better handle on business systems and processes, you won t go wrong with this book! --Richard Larson, PMP, CBAP, President, Watermark Learning

SWAT is a must-read for every aspiring (and practicing) business analyst, process manager, and project manager. It is the best business novel/fable/non-nonfiction business book around (this from someone who lists The Goal, It s Not Luck, and Critical Chain as 3 of the 5 best business books he s read). It is a clear, concise, entertaining, and EFFECTIVE introduction to systems thinking. Thank you, Tim! --Mike DeWitt, Chief Operating Officer, Cyberactive Marketing LLC

SWAT takes an important topic, systems thinking, that has been avoided by many and makes it relevant and useful. This important knowledge is wrapped in a great story which is fun to read and provides an incredible opportunity to learn about the exciting world of SWAT teams. It is a combination that leaders and learners won t be able to put down. --Kevin Eikenberry - Author, Remarkable Leadership: Unleashing Your Leadership Potential One Skill at a Time

5.0 out of 5 stars Systems Thinking via Business Fable February 26, 2010
I just put this book down...and now want to pick it back up and read it again.

It's that good.

I received the book as a review copy from the author...but don't let that get in the way of believing me when i say that this business fable is an excellent one.

SWAT is an acronym for "Systems Working All Together"...but it also helps set the stage for the story in the book.

The storyline of the book is a good one and keeps the concepts moving forward quickly. In the story, a team lead has a difficult task to work through and turns to his best friend and cousin...who happens to be a SWAT commander.

The main character, Toby, spends time with his SWAT commander cousin and learns the systems thinking concepts that make SWAT teams successful.

The concepts are described perfectly and in a manner that makes it easy to comprehend and easy to understand how you might apply them to the problems your currently facing.

I've read quite a few systems thinking books but nothing as entertaining as this. While this isn't nearly as comprehensive as Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of The Learning Organization, Timothy Johnson's put together a great little book that can help to introduce the systems thinking concepts quickly and easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking aim at excellence January 16, 2010
It's remarkable how Timothy Johnson has turned what would typically be a dry, lackluster topic into a fun, engaging and interesting story of how one can integrate systems thinking into their work setting or even in one's personal life. The author's business model is exactly what I needed to motivate staff and it helped to illustrate how critical it is that everyone works together and toward the same goal. I've read Mr. Johnson's previous works and SWAT is by far his best effort. Anyone who works in a professional setting should keep this book nearby. It's the Bible of systems thinking and project management.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Systems Go! February 28, 2010
When I got an advance copy of this book, I read it all in one sitting. It's chock full of useful tips, presented in fable form, that I can use right away to make sure everything works together on my team and in my office.

Since reading the early copy, I've made time to refer back to this book several times, and it's never disappointed me. The insights into office politics are also top notch, and exactly what I've come to expect from Timothy Johnson. It's amazing how he consistently makes what could be very boring topics come to life with his vibrant storytelling and his entertaining weaving of characters who all come together to teach a powerful lesson.
