5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous "Must Read" Thriller, June 17, 2005
By

This review is from: Sweet Talking Money (Hardcover)
You will not need any financial, medical or pharmaceutical training to follow this marvelous book. It was written for anyone who has ever in their life been to visit a doctor for a consultation, whether you are on the NHS or seeing a private physician. Even if you have never seen a doctor but you have swallowed a pill, caplet, or spoonful of liquid medicine, you must read this book. It will completely change your way of thinking about the pharmaceutical industry and your views of traditional (or even holistic) medicine. This is absolutely the most thought provoking book about the way most people think about their health in general and the mistaken views that they have about the pharmaceutical industry. This is not a merely a pharmaceutical industry-bashing screed, but a fresh, questioning look at how doctors treat ailments with pills instead of looking at and treating the root causes of the person's illness. If more doctors read this book they would reconsider their methods of prescribing medication for common illnesses. There is also the great financial-thriller aspect to this book, but it is as much an in depth assessment of our pill popping society as it is a fast paced financial thriller. This is a marvelous book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as brilliant as The Money Makers but still a great read, June 29, 2003

This review is from: Sweet Talking Money (Hardcover)
Bingham's first book The Money Makers raised the expectation bar for his second novel to a height above where the author gods reside. Although this novel's jump was high it doesn't reach the brilliant height The Money Makers did. Don't get me wrong, this is still a great book and you should still buy it but it is not the literary masterpiece The Money Makers was. You'll learn a bit more about the financial world as you follow this brilliant plot but not as much as you did in The Money Makers.

This book's about the evil multi billion dollar drug manufacturing industry who upon discovering that a brilliant young female scientist named Cameron (giving her a guy's name does become confusing with other male characters at times) has discovered a way to reprogram human cells to fight viruses, set out to discredit her and ruin her career. Meanwhile Bryn Hughes a financial banker whose wife has left him is terribly unhappy the way his career is going and upon a chance encounter with Cameron learns of her work and knows he can become a multi billionaire through her. She is only interested in helping people and not the money but reluctantly lets him take control of her destiny.

The race is on. Can Bryn and Cameron develop her work before they are stopped by the drug manufacturer Cornith Laboratories and its billions of dollars in research?

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of a Financial Adventure, August 23, 2007
This review is from: Sweet Talking Money (Hardcover)
I stumbled upon Harry Bingham in search of a great financial thriller. I was not at all disappointed by the work!! It is very well crafted, and actually quite believable.

The characters are realistic and multi-dimentional. After reading it, I found an interview with Harry Bingham in which he denotes the importance of bringing a specific tone to the characters, so that the reader knows who is speaking in the written dialogue without the need to identify the character speaking. He accomplishes that masterfully, and humorously!!

The plot is also realistic. Although the science involved is clearly fiction, the context of the pharmaceutical world and the events of the plot could very well happen and don't strain believe at all.

Overall, I would highly recommend this work!!! For the American reader, however, I should caution you that it is very much written in British style with many British colloquialisms. It can be hard to follow if you aren't familiar with the difference between everyday British and American use of the English language, but is an excellent tutor in those differences if you have the patience to follow it.
