The big caveat- the "alabastrite" chips easily. The set hadn't been out of the box for a minute before one of the dragon heads on the board lost a small chunk. A few minutes later a pawn was beheaded... two 5-year-old boys at work. However, a few drops of super-glue and the head was easily re-attached no worse for the wear.
At first I got all worked-up trying to get the kids to be BE CAREFUL... since my son was inspired so much that he put the pieces into an imagined melee and kept clashing them together with added sound effects. Then I realized- I could easily spend $45 at the toy store outfitting him with plastic knights for play. Here he gets fun toys AND gets to learn chess.
Since then we have had many enjoyable games of chess and the small dings to the set are minimal and don't bother me. I continue to enjoy the detail and the mood each time the silver knight threatens the gold bishop.
I researched for hours before picking this set, now I'm back to order another set for my nephew, along with some superglue.
It's nice and heavy and has good detail. Besides the heads breaking off, I would have made the colors a little stronger. Sometimes it is easy to mix them up.
It's a great set for $26.
That said, a couple of caveats. First of all, I did not find the pieces as "heavy" as some of the reviewers here implied. They are clearly epoxy (not metal), but the painting and effects are impressive. Still, being made of epoxy means that if you drop a piece onto an uncarpeted floor, it breaks into two (or more) pieces. Second, several of the pieces are a bit top heavy. "Epoxy" and "top-heavy" is not a good combination. Being epoxy, however, broken pieces are usually super-glued (use the gel form!) without any trace of the injury, and are as good as new in 25 seconds. Still, be careful where you place this set. We repaired two decapitated pawns and one Knight's brave steed in the first week of ownership. Of course, if neither of the players happen to be of that (nine-year-old?) mindset which likes to act out the actual combat scene when one piece captures the other, this is probably much less of a problem: I don't mean to suggest the set is fragile; it is not. The pieces are sturdy and will, I suspect, last for years if you exercise just a bit of common sense caution. Finally, just as a matter of taste: the Queen in this set is far too small, it seems to me. The whole setting is built to appear **imposing**, but somehow the Queen didn't quite get there. In fact, she is significantly thinner than the King, only a tiny bit taller than the bishops and far less regal than them in many ways. It is easy to overlook her on the board.Read more ›
