Fast Company's newest line of armor protectors are made by the German armor company SaS-Tec and employs an "intelligent" foam to provide the best possible impact protection.
The CE approved intelligent foam used in SaS-Tec armor functions progressively by adapting it's level of impact absorption proportionally to the force of the impact. Due to the entire foam construction of the armor, the wearer is not limited in their range of movement as much as with hard shell armor. At the same time the foam is of a lighter weight by volume than that of hard shell armor and has no hard edges. SaS-Tec armor also has a built-in memory effect that allows it to return to its original shape after a deformation. Meaning that its possible to reuse this armor after an impact. The foam armor can also be hand washed, since its level of water absorption is under 1%.
Most of the unique features of this armor are due to its closed cell construction. The closed cell design allows for the progressive impact absorption due to the air trapped within the armor. A slow loading of pressure on the foam allows for it to feel soft and pliable as the air has time to move, while a severe impact will cause the armor to become more resilient. The closed cell construction also is what allows the armor to be washable, by resisting the absorption of water.
The armor is constructed from polyurethane foam that has been molded into ergonomic shapes that allow for the best possible level of coverage and protection.
The SaS-Tec hip armor attaches by Velcro® to the Kevlar® lining within the Draggin' Liners to provide a customizable fit.

SAS-Tec armor is second to none... progressive viscoelastic material (intellgent silicone) that hardens on impact like 3DO (but better -- does not crack at flex points from Winter-cold use). But what is the dimensions of the back unit? Also what CE level is this certified to? I think EN-1621-2 (level 2 -- AMAZING) but doesn't say. SAS is one of the few companies that doesn't lie about meeting standards of impact absorption but not enough info here to make the purchase.

If the pic is true to the product this is likely SC-1/11. That would mean it is 400 mm tall, 280 mm wide at the shoulders, and 19 mm thick. It also has an CE Level 2 certification which means that in standarized tests a 35 kN (Kilo-Newton) impact transmits less than 9 kN to the wearer. Really... amazing... try to find a CE Leve 2 back armor from a company that can truly product the certification! I don't know of another. This could be SC-1/12 also... not sure. If 1/12 it is 90 mm longer and 50 mm wider (same CE-2 certification).
