Saavn Celebrates Bollywood

I've been a fan of Bollywood music since I stumbled across a net collection called "Bollywood for the Skeptical". This collection is a much more up-to-date collection than that one, good as it is. Track by track:

Marjaani Marjaani: Starts with a symphonic intro, and then busts out the groove with some great electronic effects. Rockin'. My favorite dance-along piece from this set.
Sajna Ve Sajna: a more downtempo track. Likeable, nice use of electronics. Okay, but not a standout for me.
Aaja Soniye: A more traditional sound to this one, nice solid bhangra beat. Danceable.
Akhiyan Na Maar - Remix: a lot like a DJ remix of name-your-popular-track. Nicely done. Another good dance track.
Move Your Body: Only in Bollywood do you get drum'n'bass and accordion. I love this one for its bizarre juxtapositions.
Sajanji Vaari Vaari: Waaay uptempo, nice growly bassline. Car horns in the rhythm track. A wonderful hash of influences in the best Bollywood tradition.
Tumse Milke Dil Ka: big production number. Great musicianship.
Mere Dholna: For total amazingness, my number one pick. The tabla players really get a change to shine and show of their fastest and flashiest riffs - and do their bol (chanted syllables that duplicate the table strokes) at a speed that you'll find hard to believe if you've not heard it before. Tremendous use of the Carnatic tradition - magnificent finely-controlled singing and ornaments; everyone just plays and sings their hearts out on this one. If you want to hear some truly stunning musicianship, you really need to listen to this one. Not so danceanble but mind-blowingly good.

Overall: if you are interested in seeing what Bollywood does with Western musical styles and seeing what it can do with the traditional styles as well, grab this collection. Even if you've never listened to it before, you'll be blown away by the ability and sheer joy of the music. And it's even free!

I downloaded this because i have gotten indian music under my skin ever since I saw Slumdog Millionaire and this album is great I danced straight through the whole thing. It was awesome!

I got this free when Amazon offered as a sampler, # 3, 4,5 and 6 are great songs with a nice pace, rest are good too but different style. These are surely great songs.
I must say Song # 2 is amazing, after all its the great voice of Sunidhi Chauhan.

I got this album for free about 2 years ago and I listen to it constantly! It may seem strange, but this is my favorite music to study to, and I don't understand the words at all. I really enjoy all of the songs!

I am a teacher of World Geography, and I put music on from the different countries and regions we are studying. Well it never fails that my students ask to hear this mix! They love it, I enjoy it, and I have listened to it many times. Thank you for giving me the chance to listen to such a lovely diverse peppy blend of Bollywood!

I love the free downloads here, but let's face it, they can be a mixed bag. Not with this collection - it's fantastic. I don't know a lot about Bollywood music but I know what I like, and every song on here is catchy and danceable, with a lot of touches from American pop music, such as vocal effects, guitar solos, occasional hip-hop flavor, etc.

My favorite is Marjaani. I just keep playing it over and over. I found out it's from a movie that came out this year called "Billu Barber". If you search for that movie title plus the song name on Youtube, you'll find the music video for it, which is also very entertaining.

Overall, a great collection to introduce you to Bollywood music. Grab it now!

I downloaded this out of curiosity. I'm no Indian music expert, but I enjoyed the music from "Slumdog" and other Westernized Bollywood movies. This music may surprise you! It's very listenable and catchy, even if you know nothing about the music and don't understand the lyrics. Some of the songs sound almost like 50s hollywood big band numbers and some of them sound more "Indian." The "remix" songs are the most accessible, but even the more traditional songs are very enjoyable. This is one of the best music downloads on Amazon of 2009.

Took this into bellydance class practice and everyone loved it. There was one track on it that I deleted.

Extremely energetic.

Another good number. Video is superb and Sushmita is very sensual in the song exuding lots of sex appeal. She was the shinning factor in the movie . She looks Stunningly beautiful . She was incredible.She added freshness to the movie . If i have to see the movie again , I will see it for Sushmita . :-) . The saree she wore were great and she carried herself very well in the movie .
